Lander stays hot on day two of Newberry Invitational, sweeping Belmont Abbey and AUM

NEWBERRY, S.C. - Lander finished the Newberry Invitational, sweeping Belmont Abbey and Auburn University 3-0 Saturday to finish the tournament 3-1.

Lander - 3 Belmont Abbey - 0

The Bearcats held off a late rally by the Crusaders to take the first set 25-21. Lander responded by rolling by Belmont Abbey 25-15 and 25-14 in the following two sets. 

On the offensive side, Katie Miller led the Bearcats with 12 kills, and Olivia Dow and Christina Aguayo had six and five, respectively. Aguayo also added a team-high 13 digs, and Patricia Pantoja had 11. Lauren Dow dished out 23 assists with three blocks, and Blondie Penaflor led all players with four blocks. 

Lander - 3 Auburn University Montgomery - 0

Trailing 7-3 in the first set, Lander would take advantage of three Warhawk errors and a kill by Olivia Dow to tie the score. Trailing 23-22, Dow would take a pass from her sister Lauren to tie the score. An ace by Katie Miller would give the Bearcats a one-point lead. AUM would tie the match back up, but a kill from Christina Aguayo and a Warhawk ball handling error gave Lander the 26-24 win. 

Trailing 23-19 in the second set, the Bearcats got two blocks, an attack error, and a kill from Katie Miller to tie the score. The teams battled back and forth, and with AUM leading 26-25, Lander would tie the game up with a kill by Aguayo to tie the score again. The Bearcats would take the lead on a kill by Lauren Dow and get the win with a block by Dow and Blondie Penalor to take a 2-0 lead. 

The Bearcats were again led by Katie Miller, who had a game-high 13 kills while hitting .684. Lauren Dow dished out 24 assists to lead all players, while Patricia Pantoja had ten digs. Olivia Dow added two total blocks to go with eight kills.  

Lander led 24-20 in the third set and held off a Warhawks rally to win 25-22. 

Miller again led the Bearcat attack with 15 kills, while Aguayo added nine. Penaflor led all players with seven blocks, and Lauren Dow had six to go with a game-high 31 assists. Patricia Pantoja recorded 16 digs, and Sophia Schneider had 12 for Lander.
