NEWBERRY, S.C. - Lander split their first two matches of 2023 Friday in the Newberry Invitational. The Bearcats lost to Arkansas-Fort Smith 3-2 in the first game but responded to sweep former Peach Belt rival Francis Marion 3-0 in the second game.
Arkansas-Fort Smith - 3 Lander - 2
Lander would race out of the gate to take a 7-1 lead over the Lions. Arkansas-Fort Smith would slowly claw their way back into the set to make it an 11-9 Lander lead. After a service error made it 12-9, the Lions scored eight straight points to take a 17-12 lead. A kill by Christina Aguayo would stop the Lion run, and the Bearcats added two more points to make it 17-15. Arkansas-Fort Smith ended the set on an 8-3 run to take the 1-0 lead.
Lander again jumped out to an early lead in the second set, leading 10-5. The Lions went on a five-point run to tie the set up at ten. Kills from Katie Miller and Lauren Dow, along with an attack error by the Lions, would give the Bearcats a 13-10 lead. Arkansas-Fort Smith then went on an 8-0 run to take their first lead of the set 18-13. Down 24-20, Lander scored four straight points to tie the match up, but the Lions would break serve and scored the final two points to take the 26-24 win.
The third set was back and forth between both teams, with the lead never getting more than three points. Trailing the Lions 13-10, Olivia Dow had two kills sandwiched between two ball-handling errors by Arkansas-Fort Smith to give Lander a 14-13 lead. The teams would trade leads, and after the Lions tied the match at 17, the Bearcats scored four unanswered points to take a 21-17 lead and held on to win 25-20.
After trailing the Lions 3-1 early in the fourth set, Lander would rally to take a 5-3 lead and never trailed again to force a deciding fifth set. Arkansas-Fort Smith would take the fifth set 15-9 to secure the win 3-2.
Katie Miller led Lander with 13 kills, while Christina Aguayo and Olivia Dow had 12 and 10, respectively. Lauren Down dished out 30 assists for the Bearcats. Patricia Pantoja had a game-high 18 digs, Aguayo recorded 17, and Miller had 13. Pantoja and Sophia Schneider each led all players with three aces, while Aguayo had five blocks and Blondie Penaflor had three.

Lander dominated the first set, winning 15-11, and then took the following two sets 25-18 to leave no doubt.
The Bearcats were again led by Katie Miller, who had a game-high 13 kills while hitting .684. Lauren Dow dished out 24 assists to lead all players, while Patricia Pantoja had ten digs. Olivia Dow added two total blocks to go with eight kills.
