GREENWOOD – The Lander baseball team would split a doubleheader with the Georgia College & State Bobcats on Thursday with the Bearcats winning the first game 7-5 while falling 7-0 in the second game.
Lander moves to 15-22 overall and 10-10 in the PBC while GCSU moves to 15-18 overall and 12-8 in the PBC.
LANDER (7) – GEORGIA COLLEGE & STATE (5)
Oliver Zohn and Bennet Nooe led the Bearcats with three hits each while three Bearcats had two hits each. Nooe and Conor Droze both had a team-high two RBI in the first game of the day.
After a scoreless first inning for both sides, the Bearcats would start a four-inning scoring rally in the bottom of the second.
Ethan Wilder would start the inning off with a triple before coming home on a sac fly from Matthew Burgess to give Lander a 1-0 lead.
Lander would score two in the third inning on a single from Bennet Nooe with the bases loaded to score Will McClellan and Oliver Zohn to make it 3-0 Lander. The fourth inning would feature a RBI double from Gary Garrett that scored Ross McCurley to give Lander a 4-0 lead while Connor Droze would blast a pitch over the right-center field fence for his fifth home run of the season to give the Blue and Gold a 5-0 lead.
Georgia College would catch fire in the sixth inning with three runs coming around for the Bobcats to make it a 5-3 game.
The Bobcats would tie the game at 5-5 with two runs in the top of the eighth.
Lander would respond with two runs in the bottom of the inning.
With one out, Zohn would send a single to center field. With the ball bouncing, the Georgia College center fielder would have trouble fielding it on the hop which allowed Garrett to score and Zohn to reach third for Lander to retake the lead. Droze would bring home Zohn on a single to right field to put Lander up 7-5.
Nick Foray got the start and went 5.2 innings for the Bearcats. Foray would allow three runs, all earned, on three hits while walking three and striking out five.
Tyler Overholt would deal the final 1.2 innings where he would shut down the Bobcats. Overhold would allow just one hit, no runs allowed while striking out two.
Evan Demurias also saw an appearance in relief.
LANDER (0) – GEORGIA COLLEGE & STATE (7)
The Bearcats saw four players each get a hit.
The Bobcats would hold the Bearcats in check for the entire game, with Lander producing just four hits
Georgia College & State scored three runs in the second, one in the third and five in the fifth.
Cooper King got the start and was awarded the loss. King went 4.1 innings where he allowed seven runs, all earned on 10 hits with one strikeout.
Michael Nastro, Tyler Bowen, and Bennett Sloper all saw relief appearances as well.
The Bearcats and Bobcats conclude the series with a single game on Friday, April 7 at 2 pm.
