GREENWOOD – The Lander baseball team pulled away from PBC foe Georgia College and State University in the bottom of the eighth on a two-RBI double from Lucas Martino to defeat the Bobcats 6-4 on Friday at Dolny Stadium.
Lander moves to 16-22 overall and 11-10 in the PBC while GCSU drops to 15-19 overall and 12-9 in the PBC.
Lander would put up the game's first run in the bottom of the second.
Lucas Martino would single and make his way to second on a ground out before Chris Manriquez sent a double to right field to score the opening run of the game.
GCSU would tie the game in the top of the fifth after a throwing error allowed a runner to score from second while a sac fly to right field gave the Bobcats the lead later in the inning.
Connor Droze got the Bearcats tied back up in the bottom of the sixth when he singled up the middle to score Oliver Zohn and Gary Garrett. Martino would hit into a double play later in the inning that allowed Will McClellan to score to put the Blue and Gold up 4-3.
The Bobcats would tie the game again in the top of the eight with an RBI to center field to score a runner from third.
Martino would give the Bearcats the lead once again in the bottom of the eighth. With the bases loaded, Martino bashed a pitch to left-center field to score Wil McClellan and Zohn to put Lander up 6-4.
Luke Johnson got the start and went six innings. Johnson allowed three runs, one earned, on six pitches while walking two and striking out four.
Tyler Overholt got the win after throwing the final 1.2 innings. Overholt struck out three while allowing just two hits and no runs allowed.
Matthew Ellis also saw an appearance in relief.
Lander hits the road for Gaffney, S.C., to battle Limestone on Tuesday, April 11 for its next contest.
