Baseball stretches winning streak to five with 4-3 victory at Anderson

ANDERSON, S.C. – The Lander baseball team would score four runs in the third inning before grinding out their fifth win in a row with a 4-3 victory at Anderson on Tuesday.

Lander improves to 23-24 overall while Anderson falls to 24-25 overall.

Landers' six hits came from three players. Oliver Zohn had three of them, with one being a double, and also came around to score once. Gary Garrett collected two hits and scored once while stealing two bases. Chris Manriquez had the final hit and drove in a pair of runs.

The Trojans were the first to score, as the home side plated a run in the bottom of the second.

Lander would respond with four runs in the top of the third.

Matthew Burgess began the inning reaching on a fielding error before Garrett singled up the middle to put runners on first and second. Zohn would reach on a bunt single to load the bases before Will McClellan drew a walk to tie the game.

A wild pitch would advance everyone and score Garrett to give the Blue and Gold a 2-1 edge.

After back-to-back outs for Lander, Manriquez singled through the right side to score McClellan and Zohn to advance the Bearcats lead to 4-1.

Anderson would strike back with runs in the fourth and fifth to make it a 4-3 contest.

Neither side would score for the rest of the game.

Michael Nastro got the start for Lander against Anderson and went four innings. Nastro allowed two runs on six hits while walking and striking out two.

Anson Merrick pitched the fifth and earned his second win of the season. Merrick allowed one run on one hit while walking and striking out one.

Garrett Major pitched the sixth and seventh inning where he allowed no runs and struck out three,

Bennett Sloper pitched a scoreless eighth where he walked and struck out one.

Tyler Bowen closed the door in the ninth with no runs and two strikeouts to earn his second save of the season.

Lander concludes the regular season with a PBC series at USC Aiken starting Friday, April 28.
