AIKEN, S.C. – After sweeping Young Harris in its last PBC series, the Lander baseball team wasted no time adding to the win colum with a 9-6 victory at USC Aiken on Friday to begin the series with the Pacers.
Lander moves to 24-24 overall and 16-12 in the PBC while USC Aiken drops to 29-19 overall and 19-9 in the PBC.
The Bearcats produced 12 hits with four hitters collecting multi-hit nights.
Connor Droze, Chris Manriquez, Ethan Wilder and Oliver Zohn all had two hits while four Bearcats had one hit each.
Droze led the way in RBI with a two-run home run coming in the fifth. Four other Bearcats also drove in a run against Aiken.
The Pacers were first to strike with two runs coming in the bottom of the second and a run in the bottom of the fourth to take a 3-0 lead.
Lander responded with four runs in the fifth inning.
Bennet Nooe led the inning off with a double to left-center field before coming around to score on a Gary Garrett infield single.
Zohn would single to left field with Garrett moving to third. A double steal saw Zohn bolt for third while Garrett came home to score the second run of the night for Lander.
With two outs in the inning, Droze blasted a home run over the right-field fence to put Lander up 4-3.
The Bearcats came back with three more runs in the sixth to increase the lead.
Manriquez started the inning with a double to center field before coming home to score on a Wilder single to left field.
Garrett would reach on a fielder's choice later in the inning while Wilder made his way to third.
A stolen base for Garrett allowed him to reach second while a throwing error from Aiken's catcher gave him the chance to move to third while Wilder scored on a failed pickoff attempt to make it a 6-3 game. Garrett eventually scored on a passed ball.
The seventh would feature yet another run for the Bearcats.
With walks from Will McClellan and Droze, Manriquez sent a single to right field to score the eighth run of the night for Lander.
Lander wasn't done scoring, as another run was added in the eighth.
With two down and Zohn and Burgess on base, McClellan sent a double down the left-field line to score Burgess and give Lander a 9-3 lead.
The Pacers added three runs in the bottom of the eighth to cut the Bearcats' lead down to three but were unable to get any closer.
Nick Foray got the start for Lander and went four innings against the Pacers. Foray allowed three runs, one earned, on nine hits while striking out two.
Evan Demurias picked up his third win of the season after throwing the next four innings. Demurias allowed three runs on five hits while walking one and striking out two.
Bennett Sloper pitched a scoreless ninth inning where he allowed just one hit.
Lander and USC Aiken return to action on Saturday, April 29 for a 2 pm start.
