DAHLONEGA, Ga. - Lander shut out #2 North Georgia 3-0 in game two of a PBC doubleheader to earn a split with the Nighthawks Saturday afternoon. North Georgia won game one 11-3. The win was the first over North Georgia for Lander since 2007, snapping a 35-game losing streak.
GAME ONE
North Georgia raced out to a 7-0 lead after three innings. In the top of the fourth, Emily Allen singled and advanced to second on a wild pitch. She scored on a single by Logan Coward to get the Bearcats on the board. A single by Shannon Antonini put runners on first and second. A two-run single by Naya Jones would cut the deficit to four. That would be as close as Lander would get as the Nighthawks scored a run in the fifth and two in the sixth to take the 11-3 win.
Jones led the Bearcats at the plate, going 1-2 with two RBIs, while Coward was 1-3 with a run scored and one run driven in. Taylor Scott (15-5) took the loss allowing five runs on eight hits in one and one-third innings pitch.
GAME TWO
Neither team could scratch a run across the plate for the first three innings. The Bearcats took their first lead of the day in the fourth inning on a two-run home run by Antonini. In the top of the fifth, Saje Jones singled with one out and moved to second base on a two-out walk by Abbie Behe. Barbara Cook singled to right field to score Jones and give Lander a three-run lead they would not relinquish.
Saje Jones and Cook had two hits to lead the offense, while Antonini drove in two with her home run. Kamryn Akins (3-3) recorded her first complete game shutout to pick up the win. She allowed four hits and struck out three.
