GREENWOOD – After being held scoreless for the first four innings against No. 11 Young Harris, the Lander baseball team would explode for five runs in the bottom of the fifth to take the lead and eventually defeat the Mountain Lions 11-5 to begin the series.
Lander moves to 20-24 overall and 13-12 in the PBC while Young Harris drops to 33-12 overall and 21-7 in the PBC.
Lucas Martino would lead the way with three hits and five RBI against the Mountain Lions that featured a home run to center field. Chris Manriquez joined Martino in the home run party with a two-run blast.
Connor Droze, Oliver Zohn and Gary Garrett also had multi-hit nights while Manriquez and Ethan Wilder had two RBI each.
The Mountain Lions would be first to score as the visitors put two runs on the board in the top of the first.
Neither side would be able to score until the fifth inning with the Bearcats' offense finally taking flight.
The Bearcats would start the inning with a pair of singles through the right side from Matthew Burgess and Garrett to get runners on first and second. Zohn would follow that up with an expertly placed bunt that walked the third base line to load the bases full of Bearcats.
With one out, Droze would hit a bouncing ball that was fielded by the Mountain Lion second basement in right field, but the throw wouldn't be in time as Burgess scored.
Martino would follow that up with a single to left field that allowed Garrett and Zohn to score as Lander took a 3-2 lead.
Wilder would single to right-center field to score Droze and Martino to give the Bearcats a 5-2 advantage.
Lander would put another run up on the scoreboard in the sixth when Will McClellan grounded out while Burgess scored to make it 6-2 Lander.
The seventh would feature a Bearcat Blast from Manriquez to left field to push the Bearcats in front 8-2.
Martino would bash a pitch over the batter's eye in center field for a three-run home run to give Lander an 11-2 lead in the bottom of the eighth.
Young Harris would find life in the ninth with three runs on five hits, but the Bearcats snuffed out the comeback to win the first game of the series.
Nick Foray would earn his fourth win of the season after going six innings in the start. Foray allowed two runs on five hits while walking and striking out three.
Evan Demurias pitched the final three innings and collected the save.
The Bearcats will have Senior Day tomorrow, April 22 with a start time set for 2 pm.
