Baseball overwhelms Francis Marion - Defeats Patriots 10-2 on Tuesday

GREENWOOD- The Lander baseball put together an impressive performance at Dolny Stadium as it defeated Francis Marion 10-2 on Tuesday.

Lander moves to 19-24 overall while Francis Marion drops to 24-21 overall.

Gary Garrett led the Bearcats with three hits. He also had one RBI, two runs and three stolen bases.

Lucas Martino, Tyler Prell and Matthew Burgess were tied for second in hits with two each. Prell led the way with three RBI while Burgess had two on the night.

After a scoreless first and second inning the Bearcats exploded for five runs in the third. With runners on first and second, Martino would send a single to right field to score Garrett for the game's first run.

Prell would send a deep drive to right-center with the bases loaded to put Lander up 4-0.

Burgess would scorch a pitch that bounced over the Patriot's second baseman to score Prell and move the score to 5-0.

Francis Marion would respond with a run in the top of the fourth.

The Bearcats would plate their sixth run of the game as a wild pitch allowed Garrett to score for third.

Two more runs would come around for Lander in the fifth inning as Dalton Stroud would put a ground ball down the first base line to score Prell from third while Garrett hit a single to left field to score Burgess from third later in the inning to push Lander ahead 8-1.

A passed ball in the bottom of the sixth allowed Martino to score from third to give the Bearcats their ninth run of the game.

The 10th run of the game for Lander would come in the bottom of the eighth after Burgess sent a sac fly to left field to score Bennet Nooe who had come in as a pinch hitter.

Francis Marion would score one run in the ninth inning to finish the game at 10-2.

Michael Nastro got the start for the Bearcats and went four innings. Nastro allowed one run on four hits while striking out two.

Anson Merrick was awarded the win after pitching a scoreless fifth and sixth inning. Merrick allowed one hit while walking one and striking out one.

Zach Pellegrino, Evan Mauldin and Tyler Bowen also saw relief appearances. Pellegrino and Mauldin both pitched scoreless innings and allowed a combined two hits while striking out three.

Lander returns to Dolny Stadium to host Young Harris starting Friday, April 21 for the final regular season home series.
