LAKELAND, Fla. - Lander split a non-conference doubleheader with Florida Southern Wednesday evening to begin their Spring Break road trip.
GAME ONE
The Bearcats got on the board first when Saje Jones reached first on an error and later scored on a single by Barbara Cook. The Mocs would answer with a run in the bottom half of the inning to tie the game at one.
The Lander offense exploded for five runs in the third to take a 6-1 lead. Abbie Behe led off with a single and stole second. Cook walked, and Emily Allen reached on an error to load the bases. A single to right by Shannon Antonini scored Behe. A double by Naya Jones cleared the bases and made it a 5-1 game. Jones then scored on a single by Rylee Omahen to give the Bearcats the five-run lead. In the top of the sixth, Logan Coward belted a home run to left-center to make it 7-2. Florida Southern scored two runs in the bottom of the seventh, but Lander held off the rally to take the win.
Naya Jones was 3-3 with a double, a run scored, and three RBIs to lead the Lander offense. Gracie Derrick finished the game 2-4 with a run scored, while Coward was 1-2 with a home run, run scored, and RBI. Taylor Scott (8-3) picked up the win allowing two runs on five hits in six innings of work.
GAME TWO
The Mocs jumped out to the early 1-0 lead in the first. In the third inning, Saje Jones singled with two outs and scored on the double by Abbie Behe to tie the game at one. Neither team could scratch a run across through the next three and a half innings, but Florida Southern would get a run in the bottom of the seventh to get the walk-off win.
Behe was 2-4 with a double and drove in the lone Lander run. Barbara Cook was 1-2, and Saje Jones finished the game 1-3 with a run scored. Bailey Pattison (7-2) took the loss allowing two runs on six hits in six innings of work.
