Bearcats Suffer First Conference Loss Against UAH

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. - The Lander Women's Lacrosse team dropped their first Gulf South matchup of the season as they fell to the three-time defending conference champions, Alabama-Huntsville Chargers, 12-9 on Sunday afternoon in north Alabama. The first loss away from home for the Bearcats this season.

Lander dropped to 6-5 on the season and 1-1 in conference play while UAH moved to 5-7 on the year and earned their first conference win.

Brooke Kelly led the way on the scoresheet as she scored four goals and assisted on another. Izzy Olson added two goals of her own while Emmy Peterson, Mickey Burnett, and Ella Benson each added a goal as well.

Kara Krusbe would make 12 saves between the posts.

The first quarter was a back and forth affair that saw Lander take leads off goals from Izzy Olson and Brooke Kelly but Huntsville responded both times and it saw the teams go into the second 15 minutes tied at two a piece.

Lander would take a 3-2 lead early in the second quarter of another goal by Kelly but the hosts started to create some separation as the quarter progressed as they would force seven Lander turnovers and only commit two of them. This resulted in a 4-0 run by the Chargers that kept Lander off the board for over ten minutes of game time. The dry spell would be snapped by Olson who would make it 6-4 as the teams headed to halftime.

However, that goal from Olson would be the last goal Lander would score for almost a full quarter of game time as UAH would open the quarter on a prolonged 3-0 run that spanned the first 12 minutes of the third quarter before Brooke Kelly would snap the skid and get Lander back within four at 9-5 heading into the final frame.

Huntsville would get the lead back out to five within the first 30 seconds of the fourth quarter but Ella Benson would respond with her first goal of the game, marking the first time in her career the freshman has scored in back to back games.

The Chargers would get the ensuing draw control but Lander's defense would step up and force a turnover that would lead to a Brooke Kelly free position goal to cut the UAH lead down to 10-7.

Both teams would be held scoreless for over six minutes until Huntsville was able to expand the lead back out to four with just over four minutes to play.

Lander would have opportunities to cut the lead in the fourth quarter but six costly turnovers would halt possessions. Then with just under two minutes to go, the Chargers would score to make it 12-7 and effectively put the game out of reach.

The Bearcats would keep fighting though as Brooke Kelly would feed a beautiful no-look pass to Mickey Burnett who would find the back of the cage to make it 12-8 with under a minute to play. Then with under 30 seconds to play, Emmy Peterson would cut through the middle and score to make it 12-9. Unfortunately there was too little time left and the Chargers would prevail with the three goal victory.

The Bearcats are back at home this weekend as they continue Gulf South play when they welcome the Shorter Hawks to Van Taylor Stadium on Friday followed by a matchup with the Lee Flames on Sunday. Those games are scheduled to start at 3:00 PM and 1:00 PM, respectively.
