Peterson Hits 200 Point Milestone in Senior Day Blowout of Shorter

GREENWOOD - The Lander Women's Lacrosse team scored 14 goals in the first half and continued to add on in the second half as they dispatched the Shorter Hawks, 19-7, on Friday afternoon at Van Taylor Stadium.

Lander improved to 7-5 overall and 2-1 in Gulf South play while Shorter dropped to 2-9 and drop their conference opener.

Seniors Emmy Peterson and Alyssa Suchan both had big games as Peterson put up nine points, the sixth of which put her over the 200 point mark in her career, making her the first Bearcat to ever cross that milestone. Meanwhile, Suchan had an eight point performance with five goals and three assists. Mickey Burnett added a hat trick of her own while Kasey Bronco, Mary Claire Robinson, Brooke Kelly, Amelia McCauley, and Izzy Olson cracked the scoresheet with a goal.

In the cage, Taryn Samons earned her first win of the season, making two saves.

The Bearcats would be held off the board for the first three minutes before Peterson would find Suchan for the opening goal. Peterson would get her first goal a couple of minutes later as Kasey Bronco would find her for the man-up goal to double the Lander lead.

Lander would continue to pile on Bronco, Suchan, Kelly, and Burnett would cap a 6-0 scoring run before the Hawks would score to break the shutout.

The Blue and Gold would get goals from Amelia McCauley and Suchan to take an 8-1 lead going into the second quarter.

Lander would cap a 5-0 scoring run with two goals from Peterson and another from Burnett to take a 11-1 lead and reach running clock territory. The Hawks would get the lead back under ten with a goal but Lander would respond with another 4-0 run with goals from Robinson, Suchan, and two from Peterson. The last goal from Peterson would be the milestone cracking goal to get her to the 200 point mark. The scoring run would give Lander a 14-2 lead going into the halftime break.

With the margin over ten goals, there was a running clock for the entire second half but Lander still found ways to score as they would get a couple more goals from Peterson in the third and then goals from Burnett, Suchan, and Olson would cap the scoring for Lander.

The Bearcats are back at home on Sunday as they continue Gulf South Conference play with a matchup against the Lee Flames. That game is scheduled for a 1:00 PM first draw with a short senior day ceremony for the team's early graduates before the game.
