GREENWOOD - After going down 5-1 with 1:30 left in the first quarter, the Lander men's lacrosse team would rebound and put away No. 19 Alabama-Huntsville with a 17-9 victory at Van Taylor Stadium on Saturday.
Lander improves to 7-3 overall and 1-0 in the PBC while Alabama-Huntsville drops to 7-4 overall and 0-1 in the PBC.
Adam Mather led the way with six goals, one assist and seven points against the Chargers. He also had two ground balls and two caused turnovers.
Kyle DeCrispino was second on the team with three goals and tied Mather in points with seven after notching four assists. DeCrispino led the team with eight ground balls while adding a caused turnover.
Nolan Oakey, Britton Weems and James Linn all were tied for the lead for caused turnovers with three each.
Nicholas Paige played the entire game for Lander and recorded 10 saves as he earned his fifth win of the season.
The Changers and Bearcats traded goals to begin the game. Brandon Perkins notched the first goal of the game for Lander to even the contest at 1-1 with 8:38 left. UAH would then score four straight goals to take a 5-1 edge with 1:30 left in the first period. Mather and Nolan Oakey scored two late goals to put Lander just two back of the Chargers after the first frame of action.
Lander would fire 12 shots on goal in the second quarter, with six finding the back of the cage.
The Bearcats would score the first two goals of the second quarter as Mather scored the first and Krew Conroy put away a man-up goal to tie the game at 5-5 with 13:52 remaining in the second quarter.
UAH would retake the lead with 10:13 remaining before Mather would notch a goal to get things tied 6-6 with 8:02.
The Chargers would once again retake the lead, this time with 7:21 left before the Blue and Gold rallied for three straight goals from Noah Longest and a pair of goals from Mather to get in the driver's seat. UAH would close the half with a late goal to make it a 9-8 contest going to the half.
The Bearcats would put the clamps on the Chargers in the second half, with just one goal allowed compared to the eight coming from the home side.
Lander would also make life miserable for UAH, with the Chargers going 4-of-14 in clearing attempts in the second half with an 11-of-24 clearing rate for the game.
Lander and UAH would trade goals to begin the third. DeCrispino would score with 10:16 left in the third before a Charger got a goal with 9:13 left.
That would be the last goal scored for the Chargers.
Carter Wilcox would lead a streak of seven unanswered goals for the Bearcats. DeCrispino would score a pair while Drew Wilson, Brady Foote, Conroy and Mather added to the scoring parade.
The Bearcats continue PBC action with a trip to Montevallo on Saturday, April 1.
