Suchan and Peterson Score Five a Piece as Lander Dominates in Conference Opener

MONTEVALLO, Ala. - After dropping tough games against Embry-Riddle and Mount Olive, the Lander Women's Lacrosse team opened Gulf South Conference play on a high note as they dominated the Montevallo Falcons from start to finish for a 18-9 win on Friday evening.

Emmy Peterson led the way with eight points as she found the back of the cage five times and assisted on another three goals. Alyssa Suchan also scored five goals while Brooke Kelly added four and Mickey Burnett scored three. Ella Benson also cracked the scoresheet for her fifth goal of her freshman season.

In the cage, Kara Krusbe made 10 saves and recorded her sixth win of the year.

After getting behind early in the last couple of games, the Bearcats would not make the same mistake Friday as they outshot the Falcons 22-15 and outscored them 11-4 in the first half.

It appeared early on that Montevallo would continue the trend of getting on the front foot early against Lander as they jumped out to an early 2-0 lead but the Bearcats would respond with a 6-0 scoring run to close out the first quarter.

Off a Montevallo turnover, Peterson would find Suchan to get the Bearcats on the board and 40 seconds later, Brooke Kelly would even the score.

Lander would have a golden opportunity to take the lead with a man up chance and Kelly would take advantage at the 4:30 mark to give the Bearcats the lead and they would not relinquish it from there.

Ella Benson would double the lead to 4-2 and Suchan and Mickey Burnett would score from the top of the arc to give Lander a 6-2 lead after the first quarter.

Kelly would get the scoring started in the second quarter to make it 7-2 before Montevallo would get a goal back to cut the lead down to four. However, Lander would continue to be aggressive and convert back to back free position chances from Peterson and Suchan to grow the lead out to six.

The Falcons would crack the scoresheet again but Lander once again responded with goals from the Suchan-Peterson duo to give the Blue and Gold an 11-4 lead at halftime.

In the third quarter, Lander would get two goals from Burnett and one from Kelly to expand their lead to eight at 14-6.

Quick goals from Suchan and Peterson would put the game pretty much out of reach at the start of the fourth quarter at 16-6. Montevallo would score a couple of goals but Lander would always have a response with two goals coming again from Suchan and Peterson to quell any momentum the Falcons had. Montevallo would get a goal with under a minute left to get the game under the ten-goal running clock but Lander would still come out victorious.

The Bearcats will continue their road trip in the Yellowhammer State as they get set to face the three-time reigning conference champion, Alabama-Huntsville Chargers on Sunday with the opening draw set for 1:00 PM ET.
