Baseball splits a doubleheader with North Georgia to begin the series

DAHLONEGA, GA. – The Lander baseball team split a doubleheader with the North Georgia Nighthawks on Saturday, with the Bearcats winning game one 6-4 while falling 1-0 in game two.

Lander moves to 8-17 overall and 5-6 in the PBC while North Georgia moves to 14-11 overall and 6-8 in the PBC.

Lander (6) – North Georgia (4)

Lander was led by Will McClellan and Chandler Moeller's two hits In game one. McClellan and Chris Manriquez both had a team-high two RBI in the first game against North Georgia.

The Nighthawks were the first to strike as an RBI single up the middle scored a run in the first.

Lander would rally in the top of the fourth to take the lead.

After Connor Droze singled and McClellan doubled to left field, Manriquez would send a two-out double to right center to score both Droze and McClellan to put the Bearcats up 2-1. Gary Garrett would mash a triple down the right-field line to score Manriquez and push Lander ahead 3-1.

The fifth would see three more runs come around for the Bearcats.

With the first two batters going down for Lander, Droze would draw out a walk to keep the inning alive. The next at-bat would see McClellan bash his team-leading fifth home run of the season to give Lander a 5-1 edge over North Georgia.

Moeller would single to left field after the home run and advance to second on a stolen base. A single from Matthew Burgess would bring home Moeller and give Lander a 6-1 lead.

The Nighthawks would strike back in the bottom of the seventh with a two-run home run to make it a 6-3 game. North Georgia would continue to try and overtake the Bearcats, as an RBI single in the bottom of the ninth made it a 6-4 contest, but the home side would be unable to score again.

Nick Foray got the start and picked up his first win of the season. Foray went five innings where he allowed one run and five hits while striking out six.

Bennett Nance earned his third save of the season after pitching the final 2.2 innings. Nance allowed one run on two hits while striking out four.

North Georgia recorded the game's only run in the bottom of the third on an RBI single hit to third base.

Cooper King went seven innings in the start and was given the loss. King allowed one run on four hits while striking out two.
