DAHLONEGA, GA. – Having to go to extra innings, the Lander baseball team scored five runs in the top of the 11th to secure the series against the North Georgia Nighthawks with a 10-6 victory on the road.
Lander moves to 9-17 overall and 6-6 in the PBC while North Georgia drops to 14-12 overall and 6-9 in the PBC.
Dalton Stroud, Connor Droze and Landon Dupert would all have two-hit days against the Nighthawks. Droze would lead the Bearcats with three RBI on the day while Stroud and Jackson Houshour both had two.
Neither side was able to score through the first five innings.
With the bases loaded, North Georgia would send two home in the bottom of the sixth with a single through the left side to go up 2-0.
Lander would respond with four runs in the top of the eighth.
With runners on first and second, a throwing error on a sacrifice bunt by Matthew Burgess allowed Caleb Singleton and Ross McCurley to score and tie the game at 2-2.
Dalton Stroud would send a single to left field to score Burgess later in the inning while a sac-fly to center field from Connor Droze scored Gary Garrett to give Lander a 4-2 lead.
The Nighthawks would plate two runs in the bottom of the ninth on a ground out and a double to center field.
Both teams would score a run in the 10th to keep the game alive.
Lander scored its lone run on an error committed by the Nighthawk first baseman that allowed Droze to score. North Georgia scored its run in the 10th on a sac fly to center field.
The Bearcats would explode for five in the top of the 11th.
With two outs, both Garrett and Oliver Zohn would hit singles to keep the inning alive. Stroud hit the third consecutive single, this one through the left side, to score Garrett and give the Bearcats a 6-5 edge.
After Will McClellan walked to load the bases, Droze sent a single to right field to score Stroud and Zohn to put Lander ahead 8-5. Jackson Houshour capped the scoring off with a double down the left field line to score McClellan and Droze.
North Georgia would muster up a two-out RBI single to left field to make it a 10-6 contest before striking out the next at-bat to end the game.
Luke Johnson got the start for the Bearcats and went 5.1 innings. Johnson allowed two runs, both earned, on two hits while striking out three.
Evan Demurias got the win after pitching the last 1.1 innings. Demurias allowed one run on two hits while striking out two.
Matthew Ellis, Bennett Nance and Tyler Overholt all saw appearances in relief as well.
Lander heads to Wingate, N.C., to battle the Wingate Bulldogs on Tuesday, March 21 for a 6 pm start.
