Baseball falls to No. 1 North Greenville, 19-7

TIGERVILLE, S.C., - The Lander baseball team would fall behind early to No. 1 North Greenville on the road, as the Bearcats fell 19-7 to the Crusaders on Tuesday.

Lander drops to 7-16 overall while North Greenville advances to 21-2 overall.

Dalton Stroud led the way with three hits against the Crusaders and had the only extra-base hit for the Blue and Gold. Three Bearcats were tied for the lead in RBI with one.

The Crusaders did most of their damage in the first three innings. The home side went up 9-0 after the first two innings.

Lander would get its first two runs in the top of the third. The first came on a double from Dalton Stroud that brought Matthew Burgess home from second. Lucas Martino would bring home the second run of the inning as he singled to right center to score Stroud later in the inning.

North Greenville would counter with two runs of its own in the bottom of the third to go up 11-2.

A throwing error would allow Gary Garrett to score in the top of the fifth before four runs came around for the Crusaders in the bottom of the inning.

The Crusaders would plate two more runs in the bottom of the sixth before the Bearcats would have their best inning of the day. The top of the seventh would see four runs come around for Lander.

The first run came after a throwing error allowed Martino and Chris Manriquez to score before a wild pitch allowed Kyle Murphy to score later in the inning. Bennet Nooe would draw out a walk to bring home Ross McCurley and make it a 17-7 contest.

North Greenville added two more runs in the bottom of the eighth to finish the scoring.

Bennett Sloper got the start and was awarded the loss. Sloper threw one inning where he allowed five runs, all earned, while allowing three hits and walking three.

Dawson Campbell, Evan Demurias, Matthew Ellis, Tyler Overholt, Garrett Major, Tyler Bowen and Gage Smith all saw relief appearances as well. Bowen was the only pitcher for Lander to not allow a single run in their appearance against the Crusaders.

Lander returns to action this weekend when they travel to Dahlonega, Ga., to battle PBC foe North Georgia for a three-game series.
