Baseball splits a doubleheader with Emmanuel on Saturday

GREENWOOD –  The Lander baseball team split a doubleheader with the Emmanuel College Lions on Saturday. Lander fell 9-6 in the first game while winning the second 15-3.

Lander moves to 7-15 overall while Emmanuel is now 12-10 overall.

Lander (6) – Emmanuel (9)

Lander was led by Oliver Zohn, Will McClellan and Tyler Prell in hits with two each. McClellan was the leader in RBI with three.

The Bearcats found themselves down 5-0 before scoring their first run in the bottom of the second. Gary Garrett would send a single through the right side to score Prell.

Emmanuel would add three more runs in the fourth to take an 8-1 lead.

Lander got a pair of runs in the fifth as Prell hit an RBI single through the right side to score Connor Droze and Garrett hit a sac fly to center field to score McClellan.

McClellan would get the Bearcats within two runs of Emmanuel in the bottom of the eighth as he sent a three-run home run to left field to make it an 8-6 contest.

The Lions would score one run in the ninth to conclude the scoring.

Cooper King got the start and was awarded the loss. King went 3.1 innings where he allowed eight runs, all earned, on nine hits while walking and striking out one.

Tyler Overholt pitched 4.2 innings of scoreless baseball where he allowed just two hits while striking out two Lions. Tyler Hall also made an appearance in relief.

Lander (15) – Emmanuel (3)

Dalton Stroud, Chris Manriquez and Matthew Burgess led the Bearcats with three hits each. Burgess led the way in RBI with three.

The Lions once again struck first, as they scored the first run of the game in the top of the first off and RBI single through the right side.

Lander would respond with five runs in the bottom of the inning. Landon Dupert would get the game tied on a single through the right side to score Dawson Campbell. Droze put Lander in front 2-1 on a single that brought Dalton Stroud home from third. Chandler Moeller brought home yet another run in the bottom of the first as he singled through the left side to score Dupert. Chris Manriquez scored Droze on a double-play to make it 4-1 Lander. McClellan came home to score on a wild pitch to give Lander a now 5-1 edge.

The Bearcats would get back to scoring in the bottom of the third.

Droze would send a home run over the left field fence for the first run of the inning while Manriquez would single to right field to bring home McClellan to give Lander a 7-1 lead. Matthew Burgess hit a single to center field to score Moeller for the eighth run of the game.

Two more runs would come around for Lander in the fourth while Emmanuel would score their second run of the game in the fourth.

McClellan scored Droze on a double to right field while a wild pitch on a strike three call to Moeller allowed McClellan to score and give Lander a 10-2 lead.

The Bearcats wouldn't slow down, as the Blue and Gold scored two runs in the sixth to counter an Emmanuel run in the top of the inning.

Manriquez would bring home another run as he singled to and reached third on an error while Moeller scored. Burgess sent a sac fly to left field to bring home Manriquez to make it 12-3 Lander.

The seventh inning saw three more runs score for the Bearcats.

Burgess would plate another run, this time with an RBI single to right center to score Moeller. Manriquez came around to score later in the inning on a wild pitch while Stroud would send a single to right center to score Burgess and give Lander a 15-3 edge.

Luke Johnson got the start and the win for Lander. Johnson went five innings where he allowed two runs, both earned, on five hits while striking out one.

Bennett Nance earned his second save of the season after pitching the remaining four innings. Nance allowed one run, an earned run, on five hits while striking out three.

The Bearcats travel to Tigerville, S.C., to battle Nationally ranked North Greenville University on Tuesday, March 14.
