Bearcats Build Lead Early, Hang on Late Against Newberry

GREENWOOD - Playing at home for the first time this season, the Lander Women's Lacrosse team built an early 6-1 lead in the first half and would hold on late to beat the Newberry Wolves, 12-10.

Lander improved to 2-0 on the year with the win while Newberry dropped to 1-2. Kara Krusbe was credited with her second win of the year in the cage.

Emmy Peterson and Alyssa Suchan each would record five points on the afternoon. Peterson would score a team leading four goals and would add an assist while Suchan would add three goals and two assists. Brooke Kelly would also add three goals of her own.

The Wolves would get the first two scoring opportunities of the first quarter but from there it was all Bearcats as Lander would rally off four straight goals to open the scoring. Kasey Bronco broke the ice at the 9:58 mark off an assist from Emmy Peterson. 50 seconds later, Peterson would find the back of the cage herself to give Lander a 2-0 lead.

Lauren Fallow would be next on the scoresheet as she would score off the assist from Alyssa Suchan at the 6:35 mark. A Suchan goal would make it 4-0 just about two minutes later. She would have a chance to make it 5-0 before the end of the quarter but her free position chance was denied and Lander would go into the second quarter up by four.

Newberry would get a goal back inside the first minute but free position goals from Suchan and Kelly would increase Lander's lead to five goals at 6-1. A few minutes later, it seemed the Bearcats would make it 7-1 but the goal would be disallowed.

After that moment, Newberry would rattle off two straight goals before halftime to cut the Bearcat lead in half going into the halftime break at 6-3.

After the break, the Wolves would add two more to cut it to 6-5 but a Peterson goal would stop the bleeding and start a 3-0 Lander run that would see Peterson score twice with a Kelly goal sandwiched between to restore Lander's lead to 9-5. However, Newberry would cut into the lead right before the end of the quarter to make it 9-6, Bearcats, heading into the last 15 minutes of action.

Lander would get the first goal of the quarter from Suchan to make it a 10-6 game but Newberry would rattle off back to back goals to cut the lead down to two goals. But Peterson and Kelly would restore the four goal lead with back to back goals of their own.

However, the Wolves would have one last charge as they would score twice in 30 seconds to cut the lead back down to two and would have a shot to cut it to one with under 30 seconds left but a Kara Krusbe save would deny the visitors that chance and the Lander defense was able to see out the last seconds to secure the win.

The Bearcats are back in action on Wednesday as they travel to Anderson for a 7:00 PM start time. Lander is back home next Saturday as they welcome the Wingate Bulldogs to Van Taylor Stadium for a 4:00 PM start time.
