Game Recap: Baseball |

Baseball falls to USC Beaufort 11-10

GREENWOOD – Although leading for most of the game, the Bearcats would fall 11-10 to USC Beaufort at Dolny Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

Lander drops to 2-7 overall and 1-1 in the PBC while USC Beaufort moves to 4-6 overall and 1-1 in the PBC.

Ian Jenkins led the Bearcats with three hits and one RBI. Tyler Prell and Bennet Nooe both had two RBI to lead Lander in that category.

Lander would explode for five runs in the bottom of the first.

After the Bearcats sent USC Beaufort three-up-three down with a pair of strikeouts, Lander would score five runs on three hits. After a lead-off fly put to right field, Oliver Zohn would reach base after being hit and Will McClellan would take a base with a walk. Down to their last out of the inning, Ethan Wilder drew out a walk to load the bases. Lander would then see back-to-back doubles from Tyler Prell and Nooe to score four runs. Ross McCurley would single through the right side to score Matthew Burgess to give Lander a 5-0 advantage.

Neither team would be able to score in the second or third inning.

The Sand Sharks were able to plate two runs on four hits, all singles, in the top of the fourth to cut to make it a 5-2 contest.

USC Beaufort would be back in the top of the fifth with another RBI single to cut further into the Bearcats' lead.

The sixth inning would be a scoreless inning for both teams.

USC Beaufort would score five runs in the top of the seventh to establish an 8-5 lead over Lander.

The Bearcats would get a run back in the bottom of the seventh as Burgess came home on a throwing error from the Sand Shark pitcher to first base.

USC Beaufort plated one run in the top of the eighth on an RBI single before the Bearcats would continue to claw their way back.

Down 9-6 heading into the bottom of the eighth, Lander would get within two runs of the Sand Sharks after a wild pitch allowed Dawson Campbell to score. A sac fly from Burgess would plate Ian Jenkins to make it a 9-8 contest.

USC Beaufort would put up two more runs in the top of the ninth to take an 11-8 lead into the bottom of the ninth.

Lander would ignite its offense to try and make it a second game with a walk-off.

Jenkins would get a single through to score Jackson Hoshour to make it an 11-9 contest while Wilder would hit into a fielder's choice to bring home  Zohn to get the Blue and Gold in striking distance. Unfortunately, that would be all the scoring Lander would be able to muster in the ninth inning.

Evan Demurias got the start for Lander and went 6.1 innings. He would allow four runs, all earned, on seven hits while striking out eight batters. Jackson Bryant picked up the loss after allowing four runs with three being earned. Bennett Nance, Chandler Moeller and Tyler Bowen all made relief appearances as well.

Lander and USC Beaufort will conclude the series Sunday, February 19.
