GREENWOOD – The Lander men's lacrosse team ran over Emmanuel College Wednesday afternoon at Van Taylor Stadium as the Bearcats took down the Lions 21-11 in their home opener.
Lander moves to 2-1 overall while Emmanuel drops to 0-1 on the season.
FIRST QUARTER
The Bearcats jumped out to an early 4-0 lead after the first quarter. Lander put 6-of-12 shots on goal in the first frame of action.
Carer Wilcox got the scoring started with back-to-back goals while Nolan Oakey score the third and fourth goal of the game to give Lander a 4-0 cushion.
SECOND QUARTER
The Lions were able to put three past the Bearcats in the second quarter, but the Bearcats responded with eight goals of their own to take a 12-3 lead into the half. 13 of Lander's 16 shots found their way on goal in the second quarter.
The Lions scored their first goal of the game with 13:30 left in the second quarter. Caedmon Ferrell would counter with a goal before Drew Wilson and Krew Conroy joined the scoring party to put Lander up 7-1. Emmanuel would score its second goal with 8:18 left before Oakey scored three consecutive goals for Lander to give the Bearcats a 10-2 edge with 4:51 left. Another Lion's goal brought the score to 10-3 before Kyle DeCrispino and Sean Reilly both notched goals to put Lander up 12-3 at the half.
THIRD QUARTER
The third quarter would be a back-and-forth frame for both sides. Lander would score four times while Emmanuel put three goals away coming out of the break. The Bearcats put 8-of-18 shots on goal in the third quarter.
The Bearcats would score two unanswered goals from Wilcox and Oakey before Emmanuel scored their fourth of the game with 11:16 left in the quarter.
Mather would score the 15th goal of the game for Lander before the Lions struck with back-to-back goals to cut the Bearcat lead to nine before Sean Reilly scored to put Lander up 16-6.
FOURTH QUARTER
The final quarter of play was the closest of them all, with both teams scoring five goals each. Emmanuel outshot the Bearcats 18 to 8 in the fourth while the Blue and Gold had to make seven saves in the final 15 minutes.
Lander would begin the fourth quarter with goals from Owen Ciali and Brady Myers before the Lions scored their sixth goal of the game with 12:53 left. The Bearcats would counter with unanswered goals from Quinn Ingalls and Logan Ellis to give Lander a 20-7 lead with 11:13. Emmanuel would outscore Lander 4-1 for the remainder of the quarter with Jeremy Wudrick scoring the 21st goal of the game for Lander.
Nicholas Paige got the start and the win for Lander against Emmanuel. He played the first half and made seven saves. Rhys Peterson made two saves while Liam Mackay made seven. Kaleb Boiter allowed no goals in his time in the cage as well.
Lander hits the road once again as it takes on Lincoln Memorial on Saturday, February 18 for a 2 pm contest.
