Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Lander Falls to Young Harris in Overtime

YOUNG HARRIS, Ga. - The Lander Women's Basketball Team fought back from a 12 point deficit to force overtime against the Young Harris Mountain Lions but the hosts went perfect from the field and the Bearcats couldn't counter as Young Harris would pull away for a 77-69 win on Wednesday evening.

Jakiyah Parker led the way with 17 points while Tanyia Gordon finished with a double double with 14 points and ten rebounds. Kayla Sanders also finished with double digit points as she netted 11 points and was a rebound short of a double double of her own.

Lander would get out to an early 10-4 lead capped by a Parker three-pointer to give Lander that six-point advantage. However, Young Harris end the quarter on a 14-2 run that would completely flip the scoreboard in their favor at 18-12 after the first ten minutes.

The second quarter was an offensive struggle for both teams as only seven shots were made by both teams. Both teams would go scoreless for the first four minutes of action before Kayla Sanders hit a turnaround jumper to break the drought. The Mountain Lions would extend their lead with another run, this time outsourcing Lander 8-2, to give them a ten point advantage. But a three pointer from Sanders and a layup from Tanyia Gordon would cut that lead in half as the halftime buzzer sounded to make the score 26-21 heading to the locker room.

The Mountain Lions would score five straight to start the half to get the lead back to double digits before Cory Santoro would break the ice for the Bearcats with a driving layup. Young Harris would score the next five to give them a 12 point lead, a lead which would end up being their biggest of the night.

However, the Bearcats would not go away quietly as a Santoro three-pointer would spark a 9-0 run for Lander to cut the Young Harris lead back down to one possession at 35-32. Young Harris would make some buckets but Lander would have an answer each time as eventually a Tyasia Freeman free throw would cut the lead to one point before a Quadaija Langley free throw would tie the game at 39 heading into the last frame of action.

The teams would exchange layups and three-pointers to start the fourth quarter, the buckets coming from Anne Secrest and Quadaija Langley, respectively. Young Harris would hit two threes, a layup, and a couple of free throws to extend their lead to eight. Lander would follow with a 8-2 run bookended with threes from Santoro and Parker to cut the lead back down to 58-56 with two minutes to go. The teams would exchange threes with under a minute to go before Tanyia Gordon would answer the call to hit a layup with four seconds left to tie the game at 58 and send the game to overtime.

Lander would take a one point lead in the extra frame off a Jakiyah Parker three-pointer but Young Harris would respond with three three-pointers of their own in a 9-0 run to get the lead back at 72-64. A Parker three and a Freeman layup would keep Lander within four but Young Harris would get a free throw and a layup late to give them the eight point win.

The Bearcats are back in action on Saturday as they travel to USC Aiken for their second matchup with the Pacers this season. That game is scheduled to tip off at 1:30 PM.
