Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Last Second Shot Doesn’t Drop as Bearcats Fall to Pacers

AIKEN, S.C. - The Lander Women's Basketball Team battled back from 16 down and had a chance to win the game with the last possession but a Tanyia Gordon shot fell short as the USC Aiken Pacers came away with the 62-61 win on Saturday afternoon.

With the loss, Lander falls to 7-14 and 4-8 in PBC play while the Pacers improve to 13-9 and 7-5 in PBC play.

Cory Santoro led the way with 17 points, Quadaija Langley added 15, and Jakiyah Parker added 13 points of her own. Kayla Sanders led the team in rebounds with seven.

Tyasia Freeman would break the ice in the game with a layup to give the Bearcats an early 2-0 lead but Aiken would close the quarter on a 16-6 run with Lander's last bucket coming on a Langley layup with just over four minutes to go in the quarter.

The Bearcats would find themselves down by as much as 12 in the second quarter but a Cory Santoro three-pointer would spark a 9-0 run to get the Pacer lead down to one possession at 23-20. However, Aiken would immediately use a 11-0 run of their own to take a 34-20 lead into the locker room.

Aiken would get a couple of early free throws to push the lead to 16 but Lander would outscore the Pacers 23-12 the rest of the quarter going a perfect 3-3 from beyond the arc including a Cory Santoro three-pointer at the buzzer to cut the USC Aiken lead down to five.

Aiken would quickly push the lead back to eight with a three-pointer but a layup from Freeman and a three-pointer from Santoro would cut the lead back to three. Santoro's three-pointer came after Lander had grabbed two offensive rebounds after missed shots. The teams would go back and forth and saw Aiken go up as much as six before a Jakiyah Parker three and a pair of Langley free throws would cut the lead down to one. The Pacers would hit two free throws of their own to get the lead back to three but Quadaija Langley would respond once again as she would hit a layup with just under a minute to play to cut the lead down to one at 62-61. The Lander defense would hold and give the Blue and Gold one last opportunity with 20 seconds left. The ball would find her way to Tanyia Gordon who's shot would come up just short as time expired as the hosts would escape with the one-point win.

The Bearcats are back at home next Wednesday as they welcome Augusta to Horne Arena for a 5:30 PM tip-off.
