#1 Wrestling Advances Eight to Second Day of Midwest Classic

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. - The top-ranked Lander Wrestling team had 22 bonus point victories and had eight wrestlers advance to day two, including three still in championship contention, of the prestigious Midwest Classic, hosted by the University of Indianapolis. Lander currently sits in first place at the event with 83 points, 5.5 points ahead of second place Central Oklahoma.

Lander had three wrestlers go perfect on the day and all three of them scored over 10 team points. #2 James Joplin (Greensboro, N.C.) picked up four bonus point wins with two tech falls, a pin, and a major decision to propel him into the semifinals on Sunday. #6 Elijah Lusk (Merritt Island, Fla.) picked up a tech fall in his first round match but grinded out two decisions at 5-1 and 8-7 to keep him in championship contention. Finally, #2 David Hunsberger (Duncan, S.C.) opened his day with two tech falls before picking up an 8-3 decision to send him to the quarterfinals where he wasted no time securing his semifinal berth, picking up a first period pin in 2:22.

Isham Peace (Okatie, S.C.), #9 Jack Tangen (Glenview, Ill.), #9 Anthony Yacovetti (Bridgeport, Pa.), and #2 Juan Edmond-Holmes (Goose Creek, S.C.) each advanced to day two but all fell in their quarterfinal bouts to take them out of championship contention. However, all of them secured at least one bonus point victory to contribute more points to Lander's overall lead in the tournament.

Jack Bond (O'Fallon, Ill.) dropped his third round matchup in a one-point decision but then proceeded to pick up back to back wins in sudden victory to advance him to day two in the consolation bracket.

Junior Downing (Redmond, Ore.) and Gage Bernall (Lakewood, Colo.) each saw their tournament runs end on Friday but each picked up multiple bonus point wins on the back side of the bracket to help fuel Lander's lead despite them being out of championship contention.

The action picks back up tomorrow at 10 AM as the Bearcats look to secure their first ever Midwest Classic team title.
