Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Lander Falls to Carson-Newman to Open Season

JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. - Tanyia Gordon (Plant City, Fla.) scored 14 points and the Lander Women's Basketball team had two more double digit scorers but it wasn't enough as the Carson-Newman Eagles used a 19-7 offense rebound advantage to score 16 second chance points to keep the Bearcats at arms length in a 59-51 defeat inside Holt Fieldhouse on Friday evening.

Gordon was joined by WyKira Johnson-Kelly (Franklinville, N.J.) and Quadaija Langley (Travelers Rest, S.C.) in double digits. Johnson-Kelly had 12 while Langley added 11 of her own. Gordon and Alicia Burgos (Milwaukee, Wisc.) each grabbed seven rebounds as well.

Carson-Newman got out to an early 5-2 lead but Lander would end the quarter on a 8-2 run with six of those eight points coming from Tanyia Gordon to take a 10-7 lead into the second quarter.

A Johnson-Kelly layup stretched the lead to five for Lander but that would the the biggest lead the Bearcats had as the Eagles responded with a 14-0 run of their own to take a nine-point lead. A jumper from Gordon and a Johnson-Kelly three would cut the Eagle lead to four. The three-pointer marked the 229th straight game with a three-pointer for Lander. However, the Eagles would score four of the last five points of the quarter to make it 25-18 in favor of the hosts at the halftime break.

The Bearcats did not go away quietly as they would creep back into the game with a three from Quadaija Langley and a jumper from Tanyia Gordon to cut the lead to one but that was as close as Lander would get. From there the teams would exchange buckets as the deficit would fluctuate anywhere from two to five before the Eagles got it up to seven right before the end of the quarter at 41-34.

In the fourth quarter, Carson-Newman continued to keep the Bearcats at arms length but a Langley three-pointer got the deficit back down to five but the Blue and Gold couldn't get closer as the Eagles were able to knock down free throws down the stretch to secure the win.

The Bearcats get back to play tomorrow as they take on the Lenoir-Rhyne Bears for a 1:30 tip-off inside Holt Fieldhouse.
