AUGUSTA, Ga. - In a battle of the last two undefeated teams in the Peach Belt, Lander knocked off Augusta 3-1 Saturday afternoon to extend their school-best winning streak to 13. The loss snapped a 13-game winning streak for the Jaguars.
The Bearcats held Augusta to a .110 hitting percentage while recording six aces.
Leading 12-11 in the first set, Lander would score four straight points to extend their lead to five. Back-to-back kills by Vlondie Penaflor and Christina Aguayo would make it an 18-12 set. The Jaguars would battle back and make the score 23-17, but Lander would get kills by Penaflor and Lauren Dow to end the set and give the Bearcats the lead.
With the score tied at 13, the Bearcats would score seven unanswered points to take a commanding 20-13 lead. The Bearcats would take a 24-15 lead to set up set point, but Augusta scored seven straight points themselves to make the score 24-22, but a kill by Katie Miller ended the set, and Lander took a 2-0 lead.
The Jaguars would take the third set 25-23 to keep the match going, but Lander would come out in the fourth set on fire. The Bearcats would dominate in the fourth set to take the 25-15 win and clinch the victory.
Katie Miller recorded a double-double with 20 kills and 23 digs. Blondie Penalor had nine kills and seven blocks, while Olivia Dow recorded 11 kills. Lauren Dow dished out a game-high 40 assists, and Patricia Pantoja had 18 digs.
