Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Late Surge Not Enough as Saints Down Bearcats

GREENWOOD - After having their four-game win streak snapped on Wednesday at Georgia College, the Lander Women's Basketball team suffered another setback on Saturday afternoon as they fell to Flagler 61-55.

Lander would fight back from down 11 to cut the lead to one late in the fourth but couldn't find the clutch basket to give them the lead.

The loss drops Lander to 7-12 on the year and 4-6 in PBC play while Flagler improved to 5-15 and 2-8 in PBC play.

Jakiyah Parker and Quadaija Langley both had 18 points to lead the Bearcats while Cory Santoro added ten points of her own. Kayla Sanders grabbed nine rebounds to lead the team.

For the Saints, Sharale McCormick led the team with 21 points while Jessica Dowdy added ten of her own.

Flagler would jump out to an early lead with a 7-2 run to start the game aided by two Bearcat turnovers. Jakiyah Parker would score six straight points to cut the lead down to two before a Langley layup would tie the game. The teams would exchange two-pointers as the clock ticked down to keep the game tied at 12 before Cory Santoro hit a three at the buzzer to give Lander a 15-12 lead after the first quarter.

The offensive woes that plagued Lander on Wednesday against the Bobcats reared their head in the second quarter as Lander would only shoot 3-15 from the field in the second ten minutes and would not make a three.

Tyasia Freeman would hit a jumper to start the period to increase Lander's lead to five but the Saints would rattle off three straight three-pointers to flip the scoreline to 21-17 in favor of the visitors. In total Flagler would hit six threes in the quarter that saw their lead increase to six before the media timeout.

After the media, Lander would make a bucket to cut the lead to four but Flagler responded with another three to make the lead seven. Parker would hit a jumper of her own to cut the lead to five but that would be the last points that the Bearcats would have from the run of play as a Freeman free throw would give them their only point for the rest of the quarter. Flagler would hit another three and layup to give them a nine-point lead at 32-23 heading to the locker room.

Lander would come out of the break with baskets on two straight possessions by Parker and Langley but Flagler would respond by making their first two three-point attempts to increase their lead to 38-27.
From there Quadaija Langley would take over as she would score 11 straight points for Lander to incrementally cut the lead down to five before she would assist on a Jakiyah Parker three to get the lead down to two. Flagler would get a bucket to get the lead back to four but two Cory Santoro free throws would get the game back to one possession at 48-46 Flagler heading to the last quarter of action.

Flagler would open up the fourth with two straight baskets to get their lead back up to six. Santoro would hit a three to cut the lead to three but Flagler would respond in kind to restore the six-point advantage.

A Freeman free throw and Langley layup would get the lead back to three. After a Saints free throw, Tanyia Gordon, fresh into the game after missing the first three quarters, would hit a three to ignite the Horne Arena crowd and cut the lead to one.

Unfortunately, that would be the last basket the Bearcats would make as they would have several chances to take the lead but couldn't convert. Flagler would add a layup and three free throws to ice the victory.

Lander hits the road for their final midweek road game as they face Young Harris on Wednesday for a 5:30 PM tip-off.
