No. 2 Wrestling dominates Mount Olive and Belmont Abbey in a tri-meet

MOUNT OLIVE, N.C. – After being ranked the No. 2 team in The Open Mat on Wednesday and No. 2 in the latest NWCA Div. II rankings, the Lander wrestling rolled over Mount Olive and Belmont Abbey in a tri-meet Saturday afternoon.

Lander moves 16-2 overall and 6-0 in the SACC. The Bearcats are now winners of their last six conference matches and have won seven straight overall.
 
No. 2/2 Lander (36) – Mount Olive (10)
The Bearcats started hot against the Trojans after beginning the match up 15-0 with two pins. James Joplin kicked things off with a first-period pin at 125 against the Trojans before Elijah Lusk earned three more points with a 2-0 decision before Zeth Brower used a first-period pin of his own to give the Blue and Gold a 15-0 edge.
Mount Olive would earn a major decision at 149 and a pin at 157 to get within five points of Lander.
David Hunsberger would respond with a 6-1 win by decision to get the Bearcats back on the scoreboard and increase the lead to 18-10. Hunsberger used an escape and takedown along with a point from riding time to extend his lead in the third period.
Jack Bond would help increase Lander's lead to 21-10 with a 10-4 win by decision at 174 that saw takedowns in all three periods while the only points picked up by Mount Olive were from escapes.
Logan Hall kept the momentum going with a second-period pin at 184 to push the lead to 27-10 in favor of the Bearcats.
The Bearcats would not drop another match against the Trojans with Anthony Yacovetti claiming another pin for Lander while Juan Edmond-Holmes closed the match out with a 9-6 win by decision.
Lander and Mount Olive had one exhibition match with Gage Bernall pinning his opponent in the first period.
 
No. 2/2 Lander (41) – Belmont Abbey (4)
Lander once started with a pin, as Joplin tossed his opponent away in the first period. Lander would continue to rack up the points as Elijah Lusk would win by decision while Zeth Brower would toy with his opponent, earning a 16-2 major decision that saw back-to-back four-point near falls in the second period.
Jack Tangen would notch a 2-1 win by decision at 149 before the Crusaders would get on the scoreboard with a major decision at 157 to make it a 16-4 contest.
Hunsberger would respond with a pin 44 seconds into the first period to widen the gap to 22-4. Bond would earn his second win of the day with an 8-3 win by decision to push the lead to 25-4.
Hall took a 12-2 major decision to keep the point coming in for the Blue and Gold as the lead increased to 29-4.
The Bearcats would finish the match with Belmont Abbey with back-to-back pins as both Yacovetti and Edmond-Holmes recorded first-period pins to give Lander a final score of 41-4.
 
The Bearcats return to Horne Arena on January 24 as they host Lincoln Memorial for a 7 pm start.
