BELMONT, N.C. - Lander shutout Belmont Abbey 3-0 Wednesday night to extend their winning streak to six games as they head into Peach Belt Conference play this weekend.
With the score tied at seven in the first set, Maya Walker took a pass from Madilyn Reed to give Lander the lead. Reed and Walker teamed up for a block to make it a two-point lead, and Walker followed with a block to give the Bearcats a 10-7 lead. After the Crusaders pulled to within one point, Lander scored four unanswered points to go up 14-9. The Bearcats held off a late rally to take the first set 25-19.
Trailing 2-0 in the second set, Lander got a kill by Olivia Dow and a service ace by Katie Miller to tie the set at two. The Crusaders answered with two points to regain the lead. The Bearcats went on a 5-0 run with the help of two kills by Christina Aguayo and one by Dow. Belmont Abbey battled back and took a 20-18 lead, but Lander would use back-to-back attack errors to take the set 27-25.
With the score tied at one, a kill by Dow sparked a run of seven unanswered points, capped off with a kill from Kamaria Curry. Later in the set, the Bearcats used a six-point run to take a commanding 18-8 lead and went on to win 25-18.
Miller led all players with 12 kills, while Aguayo and Walker added eight and six, respectively. Reed dished out 35 assists, and Patricia Pantoja had 13 digs. Walker finished with a game-high four blocks, and Aguayo hit .583 for the match.
