Lander men's soccer downs No. 14 Chowan 2-1 - Claims program's 500th victory

BANNER ELK, N.C. - The Lander men's soccer team came away with an impressive victory as it defeated No. 14 Chowan University on the campus of Lees-McRae to earn not only its first victory of the season but the 500th in program history.

Lander improves to 1-0-1 overall while Chowan falls to 0-2-0 to begin the season.

For the second straight game in Banner Elk, Lander produced more shots and shots on goal than its opponent. The Bearcats outshot Chowan 15-to-3 with the Blue and Gold putting six shots on goal.

Through the first two games, Lander has out shot its opponents 36-7 with a combined 17 shots on goal.

Lander was the first to score, with Max McNulty putting away his second of the year in the 21st minute of play. The Bearcats took a 1-0 advantage into the half after attempting seven shots compared to just one shot attempted by the Hawks.

The second half would wind down to the 81st minute before Chowan was able to tie the contest. Not wanting to let the game get away from them, the Bearcats would battle back in the 83rd minute with Marco Gueli scoring his first goal of the season off a pass from Carlos Madrid to push the Bearcats ahead 2-1.

Lander now sets its sights on a trip to the Sunshine State where the Bearcats will battle No. 13 Palm Beach Atlantic and Lynn University on September 2 and 4.
