Oh The Places You'll See: Multiple Bearcats Are Gaining Experience Representing Their Home Country

GREENWOOD – Lander athletics aims to find not only the best talent in the country, but abroad as well. The Bearcats will have numerous student-athletes either set to compete or are currently/have competed on the international stage.

Brandon Perkins and Jeremy Wudrick, both incoming student-athletes, along with Liam Mackay will all represent their respective countries and the men's lacrosse program. Perkins, a transfer from Limestone, will suit up for the Puerto Rico U21 lacrosse team at the U21 World Lacrosse Games. Wudrick, an incoming freshman from Saskatchewan, represents Canada at the World Junior Lacrosse Championships while returning Bearcat and fellow Canadian Liam MacKay battles in the Minto Cup.

The men's rugby team will see Tomas Mussi compete for Team Paraguay at the South American games. Mussi will have the privilege of not only competing for his home country but will also play in his hometown as Asuncion, Paraguay will be the host site.

The women's rugby team recently saw both Bailey Burt and Jessica Burt named to the USA U21 women's rugby team.

Women's golf will be represented by Victoria Callahan as she takes part in the World Amateur Team Championships in Paris, France for Costa Rica at the end of August.

What our coaches are saying

Mark Riddle - Head Men's/Women's Golf Coach
"I'm very excited for Victoria to get the chance to compete in a world tournament and to represent her country. It's another big step for our women's program to have a player that is one of the best in her country!"

Ken Pape - Head Women's Rugby Coach
"Over the summer watching Jess and Bailey competing and representing Lander on the international stage was exhilarating. I am sure they will bring a new level of game understanding back to our team that will help us grow and become stronger as we head towards the upcoming season."

Anthony LePore - Head Men's Lacrosse Coach
"I'm unbelievably proud and excited to watch our Bearcats compete on a national and international level.  We are growing the Lander brand on some of the biggest stages of our sport and I am grateful that our young men are representing us with enthusiasm and honor."

Buck Billings - Director of Rugby Operations/Head Men's Rugby Coach
"This is an incredible opportunity for Tomas! He's getting to play on the highest stage of international rugby in South America. The South America games is only played every four years and in a different location each year, this year it's being hosted in Tomas' home city, which has to make it more special for him. Tomas came here having played for his country's senior National Team on a few occasions, but this is a bigger stage given how popular this event is in South America. His hard work and improvement while he's been here has made the team selectors take note in persisting on him being selected for this team."
