GREENWOOD – The No. 2 and No. 3 teams in the Peach Belt Conference needed extra time, as it took untill the 11th inning for Columbus State to secure a 4-3 victory over the Lander Bearcats.
Lander concludes the PBC Tournament with an overall record of 35-15 while Columbus State moves to 30-23 overall.
After allowing a solo shot to left field and two runs on an RBI double in the second inning, the Bearcats struck back in the top of the sixth on a solo home run from Barbra Cook to cut the Columbus State down 3-1. After an 11-pitch at-bat, later in the inning Lauren Collie connected on a pitch and sent it through the left side to score Abbie Behe from third to bring Lander within a run of Columbus State.
Lander got the contest tied 3-3 in the top of the seventh. Gracie Derrick started the inning with an infield single and advancing to second on a throwing error from the Columbus State shortstop. Derrick moved to third on a sac bunt from Bridget Tierney to get within 60 feet of home. After Shannon Antonini grounded out to the pitcher, Derrick bolted home and gracefully danced herself around the tag from the Cougar's catcher to make it a 3-3 contest.
With the Cougars threatening with a runner on third, the Bearcats were able to navigate around and force extra innings.
The ninth inning saw both sides put a scare into each other. Both the Bearcats and Cougars were able to get runners on second and third but struck out to conclude the inning.
It wouldn't be until the 11th inning that another run would score. With runners on first and second, Columbus State would sail a single to left field and score the winning run.
Rebecca Bosen started the game for the Bearcats in the circle where she went two innings and allowed three runs, all earned on three hits. Elizabeth Gollin pitched the remainder of the game for the Blue and Gold.
