COLUMBUS, Ga. – The Lander baseball team once again battled nationally ranked Columbus State to a close contest, but ultimately fell 3-2 to begin the series.
Lander drops to 22-28 overall while Columbus State moves to 39-9 overall.
This is the third game this season that Lander has lost to Columbus State by two runs or less.
Walker McDowell led the Bearcats with two hits while also recording an RBI. Connor Droze had a hit and recorded the other RBI for Lander.
The start of the game saw both teams score in the first inning. With two out in the top of the first, Droze singled down the right field line to score McDowell from second base to give Lander an early 1-0 edge. Columbus State used an RBI single of its own, this time to center field to score a runner from second to tie the game 1-1. McDowell would help push Lander in front in the top of the second as he hit an RBI single up the middle to score Gary Garrett from second and give Lander a 2-1 advantage.
Neither team would be able to score until the seventh inning when the Cougars used an RBI single to right field to score a runner from second and tie the contest 2-2.
Columbus State would seal the deal in the bottom of the ninth on a walk-off solo shot to left field.
Nick Foray got the start against Columbus State where he pitched six full innings. Foray allowed just one run on three hits while striking out three. Bennett Nance was awarded the loss after allowing the home run. Bryce Jackson also saw a relief appearance where he allowed a run on two hits while striking out one.
Lander will battle Columbus State tomorrow at 1 pm with hopes of winning the second game of the series and forcing a winner-take-all game three later on Sunday.
