COLUMBUS, Ga. – After losing the opening game to Columbus State on Saturday, the Lander baseball team needed a win against the Cougars to force a winner-take-all game three in the opening round of the PBC Tournament. Unfortunately, the Bearcats would watch their season end in Columbus, Ga., with an 8-5 loss in the second game of the series.
Lander ends its season with a 22-29 overall record while Columbus State moves to 40-9 overall.
Connor Droze put together an impressive performance against Columbus State, going 3-for-4 with two home runs and four RBI. Walker McDowell joined Droze with a multi-hit game. McDowell had two hits while four other Bearcats had a hit each.
The Bearcats once again struck first against Columbus State. Lander found runs in the top of the first on a two-run home run to right field from Droze that scored Landon Dupert to put the Bearcats up 2-0. The Cougars would counter with four runs in the bottom of the first after a three-run home run to center field and an RBI single up the middle plated the four runs to give the Blue and Red a 4-2 edge.
After a silent second inning for the Bearcats and Cougars, the Bearcats got back on the board with two runs coming around in the top of the third. After Matthew Burgess and McDowell got on with singles and Dupert walked to load the bases, Ian Jenkins flew out to center field to bring home Burgess while an RBI single to right field from Droze brought home McDowell to tie the game 4-4.
Columbus State would respond with four runs in the bottom of the inning to retake the lead. After the lead-off hitter for the Cougars walked, an RBI double scored a run before a two-run home run to left field put the Cougars up 7-4. Later in the inning, the Cougars would strike with an RBI single to left field to make it an 8-4 contest for the home side.
Droze made his mark known yet again as he bashed a solo shot to left field to make it an 8-5 game in the top of the fifth.
Neither the Bearcats or Cougars would be able to score for the remainder of the game.
Braeden Burton got the start against the Cougars and went just an inning where he was awarded the loss. In his inning of work, Burton allowed four runs, all earned on four hits while striking out two. Zach Pellegrino and Bryce Jackson also saw relief appearances while Tyliss Roper and Kurt Rogers pitched the final three innings while allowing just one hit, one walk and striking out two Cougars between the two of them for three scoreless innings.
