GREENWOOD – After a rain delay that caused both teams to sit for over an hour, the Lander Bearcats scored five runs in the fifth inning en route to an 8-4 win to conclude the regular season.
Lander moves to 22-27 overall and 11-15 in the PBC while USC Aiken drops to 20-27 overall and 12-15 in the PBC.
Connor Droze led the Bearcats with four hits that featured a double and home run. Chandler Moeller had three hits that featured an RBI double. Landon Dupert, Ian Jenkins and Matthew Burgess all had multiple hits as well against the Pacers. Droze and Dupert were tied with two RBI on the day.
The Bearcats would be the first to score, as a pair of runs came across in the bottom of the first. Dupert helped plate the first run on an RBI single up the middle to score Walker McDowell while Jenkins singled to right field to score Dupert later in the inning to put Lander up 2-0.
After a scoreless second inning for both teams, the Pacers would find their way to the scoreboard in the top of the third on the back of a two-run home run to right field to tie the contest 2-2. USC Aiken would take over in the top of the fourth with two more runs. An RBI single and a wild pitch helped give the Pacers a 4-2 edge.
Lander and USC Aiken would need to take a break in the action, as weather would delay the game by over an hour.
Coming out of the delay, Lander would plate five runs in the bottom of the fifth after holding Aiken scoreless in the top of the inning. The Bearcats got within one run of the Pacers after Dupert singled through the right side to bring home Burgess from second. Jenkins would help put the Bearcats back in front the next at-bat. Hitting a single to center field to bring home McDowell from third, a fielding error from the Pacer's center fielder allowed Dupert to score from home and Jenkins to touch all four bases to give Lander a 6-4 edge. Moeller would send a double to right-center field to score Droze who had doubled earlier in the inning to put Lander in front 7-4.
Neither side was able to score in the sixth, but the seventh would see Droze smash his eighth home run of the season with a blast over the right-field fence to give Lander an 8-4 advantage.
The eight and ninth innings would be scoreless as the Bearcats took the series with an 8-4 victory.
Michael Nastro got the start and pitched the first four innings before the weather delay. Nastro struck out two while allowing four runs on six hits. Kurt Rogers pitched five scoreless innings to claim the win. Rogers allowed just two hits and two walks while striking out seven.
The Bearcats will battle Columbus State in the PBC quarterfinals May 6-8 in a best of three series.
