YOUNG HARRIS, GA. – Although taking a one-run lead into the bottom of the ninth, the Lander baseball team fell to Young Harris 6-4 on Friday evening.
Lander drops to 20-23 overall and 9-12 in the PBC while Young Harris moves to 30-14 overall and 14-8 in the PBC.
The Bearcats had five players record a multi-hit night. Gary Garrett led the way with four hits against Young Harris. Landon Dupert was close behind with three hits and one RBI. Mason Streater had two hits and two RBI on the night.
Lander was first to score, as the Bearcats plated a single run in the top of the third after two scoreless innings. Streater would hit a single through the left side to bring home Vincent DeRubeis to give Lander a 1-0 advantage.
Neither side would be able to produce any runs in the fourth or fifth innings while Lander would get back to work in the top of the sixth. A fielding error hit from the Mountain Lion's third baseman allowed Matthew Burgess to reach base safely while allowing Ethan Wilder to score. Later in the inning, Dupert singled down the left-field line to score Garrett. Streater would bring home the third run of the inning, as he drew a walk with the bases load to give Lander a 4-0 edge.
Young Harris would make things interesting in the bottom of the eighth with three runs scoring for the home side. The Mountain Lions scored their runs on a solo shot to right field and a two-run RBI triple to center field.
The Mountain Lions would strike once again, as a three-run home run to left field in the bottom of the ninth gave Young Harris a walk-off victory to claim the first game of the series.
Nick Foray got the start against Young Harris and went six complete innings. Foray allowed no runs on six hits while striking out six as well. Bryce Jackson was awarded the loss after pitching the ninth. Braeden Burton and Zach Pellegrino also saw relief appearances.
Lander and Young Harris resume the series on Saturday for a 2 pm start.
