Men's lacrosse begins PBC action with a 17-11 victory over Montevallo

GREENWOOD – The Lander men's lacrosse team started conference action off in style, as the Bearcats took down the Montevallo Falcons 17-11 at Van Taylor Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

Lander moves to 8-4 overall and 0-1 in the PBC while Montevallo drops to 5-6 overall and 0-1 in the PBC.

The Bearcats were led by Carter Wilcox's seven goals. Quinn Ingalls, Drew Wilson and Adam Mather all had three goals each. Wilcox led the Bearcats with nine points and was in a three-way tie for the team lead in assists with two. Wilcox also led the Bearcats in ground balls with Jake Watson second with six. Watson also went 13-of-22 in faceoffs against the Falcons. James Linn led the way with three caused turnovers while Noah Longest was second with two.

Montevallo scored the game's first goal with 14:05 left in the first period. Mather helped tie the contest with a goal at 13:40 before Montevallo struck back with another goal at the 12:55 mark. Lander would score three unanswered goals to take a 4-2 lead after Ingalls, Wilcox and Wilson all scored to put Lander in front with 9:02 in the first. Montevallo scored one more goal to make it a 4-3 contest as the first quarter ended.

Lander would win the second frame, with the Blue and Gold outscoring the Falcons 5-1.

After the two sides traded goals to begin the second quarter, Lander would score four consecutive goals to go up 10-4, with Wilcox scoring a pair of goals while Ingalls and Mather also added to the goal pile.

Lander and Montevallo would continue to battle, with the Bearcats outscoring the Falcons 8-7 for the second half of the game. Wilcox would score three of his seven goals in the second half while Mather, Ingalls and Wilson helped Lander outpace the Falcons to start conference play 1-0.

Liam Mackay earned the win after playing the first half of the game. Mackay made eight saves in 30 minutes while allowing just four goals. Nicholas Paige made six saves in the remaining 30 minutes while allowing seven goals.

The Bearcats continue conference action with a road contest to Young Harris on April 9th for a 2 pm start.
