FLORENCE, S.C. – The Lander baseball team battled Francis Marion into extra innings, but it was the Patriots that would come away with an 8-5 victory in the 12th inning.
Lander drops to 19-20 overall while Francis Marion improves to 24-13.
After a pair of scoreless innings, Lander was the first to score in the top of the third. With Caleb Singleton and Vincent DeRubeis on base with two outs, Mason Streater sent a ball to center field to score Singleton while being thrown out at second to end the inning.
Lander scored again in the fifth to double its advantage. With the bases loaded, DeRubeis drew a walk to bring home Matthew Burgess home from third.
Burgess would be involved in the scoring yet again, as the Bearcats struck again in the sixth. With Bradley Davis on third and Bennet Nooe on second, Burgess sent a sac fly to left-center to bring Davis home and give Lander a 3-0 edge.
After seven shutdown innings, the Patriots finally got on the board in the bottom of the eighth, scoring three runs to tie the game in the process.
Lander and Francis Marion would need extra innings after a scoreless ninth for both squads.
The Bearcats would begin with a run in the top of the 10th. Singleton would help bring home the go-ahead run on an RBI single up the middle to score Justin Wager who pinch-ran for Davis. The bottom of the inning would see the bases full of Patriots, with just a lone run coming in for FMU to tie the contest at 4-4.
Lander would once again go out in front, this time in the 12th inning. Trying to put a sacrifice bunt down, Gary Garrett caused the Patriot's pitcher to overthrow first base and allow Nooe to score from first base to push Lander ahead 5-4.
The Patriots would however put an end to things in the bottom of the 12th, as a three-run home run would walk them off with the victory.
Michael Nastro got the start and went a collegiate-best 7.1 innings. He allowed three runs, all earned on five hits while striking out three. Zach Pellegrino was awarded the loss after allowing four runs on five hits in 1.2 innings of work. Kurt Rogers and Braeden Burton also saw relief appearances.
The Bearcats return to conference action with a trip to Columbus State starting April 14
