COLUMBUS, GA. – The Lander baseball team had nationally ranked Columbus State tied late in the ball game, but the Cougars would pull away in the eighth to win the first game of the series 7-5.
Lander drops to 19-21 overall and 9-10 in the PBC while Columbus State moves to 32-6 overall and 16-3 in the PBC.
Mason Streater led the Bearcats with two hits which featured a home run and double. Streater was joined by Landon Dupert for the lead in RBI with two against the Cougars.
Lander would be the first to strike. The Bearcats would plate two runs in the top of the first off a two-run blast from Dupert that also scored Caleb Singleton. Columbus State responded with a run in the bottom of the inning with an RBI double to center field to bring home a run for the Cougars. Columbus State would tie the contest 2-2 in the bottom of the second with another double, this time down the left-field line. The very next inning would see the Red and Blue take the lead as the Cougars hit a home run and a single that brought two more runs around for the home squad.
The fourth and fifth innings would see no runs for either side, but that would change in the top of the sixth. Streater would get a hold of a pitch to clear the right-field fence for a two-run blast that scored Ian Jenkins to bring Lander within a run of the Cougars. The contest would be tied once more after a double steal saw Singleton race for second and Matthew Burgess take home plate.
After a scoreless seventh, the Cougars would take over once again. Columbus State retook the lead on a solo shot to left field while a balk with the bases loaded scored another run to put the Cougars in front 7-5.
Anson Merrick got the start to begin the series against the Cougars and went four innings. Merrick allowed five runs on eight hits while striking out two. Kurt Rogers was awarded the loss after allowing the last two runs on three hits in 1.2 innings of work. Garrett Major, Tyler Bowen and Zach Pellegrino all saw relief appearances as well.
Lander and Columbus State play the second game of the series tomorrow at 5 pm.
