GREENWOOD – After falling behind early, the Lander baseball team battled back and defeated No. 25 North Georgia 8-6 at Dolny Stadium on Saturday to even the series 1-1.

Ethan Wilder,Gary Garrett and Matthew Burgess led the Bearcats with two hits each. Walker McDowell had three RBI on the game while Tyler Prell brought home two.

After a scoreless first inning, the Nighthawks would plate three runs in the top of the second after a ground out with the bases loaded brought home a run along with runs coming in on a double through the right side and single to center field. The Bearcats would counter with a run of their own as Prell grounded out but brought home Mason Streater in the process.

The third would see Lander plate another run after Vincent DeRubeis doubled to center field to score Burgess and make it a 3-2 ballgame.

The fourth inning would see runs for both sides. An infield single would allow North Georgia to score its fourth run of the game before the Bearcats would get hot in the bottom of the inning. Prell would bring home Wilder and Streater with a single through the left side to tie the game 4-4. McDowell would give Lander its first lead of the contest as he slapped a double down the left-field line to plate Garrett and Prell to put Lander up 6-4.

North Georgia came back with a run of their own in the top of the fifth, as a double down the left side plated a run to bring North Georgia within a run of Lander.

Lander would extend its lead to 8-5 in the bottom of the fifth. Garrett began the inning with a double to left field and would come home on a throwing error the next at-bat to make it a 7-5 contest. McDowell would reach base initially after a wild throw, which would be enough to score Burgess and give Lander their 8-5 edge.
