Game Recap: Baseball |

Baseball falls late to No. 25 North Georgia, 14-10

GREENWOOD – Although leading after the eighth inning, the Lander baseball team allowed five runs in the top of the ninth as it fell to No. 25 North Georgia 14-10 on Sunday afternoon.

Lander drops to 9-8 overall and 1-2 in the PBC while North Georgia moves to 12-5 overall and 2-1 in the PBC.

Lander was led by Ian Jenkins' four hits. Two of his hits were multi-base hits as he had a double and a triple against North Georgia. Jenkins along with Bradley Davis and Vincent DeRubeis had three RBI. Ethan Wilder joined Jenkins, Davis, DeRubeis and Walker McDowell in the multi-hit party.

The Bearcats would take an early lead in the first when DeRubeis singled up the middle to score McDowell and Jenkins had an infield hit to score DeRubeis later in the inning.

North Georgia would respond with two runs in the second on a pair of singles through the right side in the top of the second to plate two runs while a sac fly in the third gave the Nighthawks their first lead of the game.

The fourth inning would see North Georgia hit back-to-back-to-back home runs to go up 6-2. The Bearcats responded with two runs in the bottom of the inning, as DeRubeis singled to left field to score Dupert and McDowell from second and third to make it a 6-4 contest.

Neither side would score in the fifth while Lander would score three runs in the sixth inning. The first run came on a Jenkins RBI single to right center field to score Matthew Burgess while a single from Davis to left field scored Jenkins and DeRubeis to put Lander up 7-6.

The eighth inning saw both sides score three runs. North Georgia would bring home two runs on a home run to right field while a sac fly would bring home the third run of the inning for the Nighthawks.

Jenkins would plate the first run of the bottom of the eighth on a triple to right-center field to score Seth Richardson and DeRubeis while a single up the middle from Davis gave Lander a 10-9 lead with Jenkins coming home to score. A two-run double and a three-run home run would be how North Georgia would do its damage in the top of the ninth, as Lander was unable to respond.

Lander and North Georgia combined to throw 15 pitchers in the final game of the series.

Bennett Nance got the start and went four innings. He allowed six runs, four earned on six hits while striking out five. Kurt Rogers was given the loss after allowing five runs on three hits in the later stages of the game. Evan Mauldin, Zach Pellegrino, Michael Nastro, Garrett Major and Drew Luckey also saw relief appearances.

Lander hits the road for a midweek non-conference matchup against Wingate on Wednesday, March 9 at 4 pm.
