GREENWOOD – After tying the series at 1-1 the day before, the Lander baseball team fell to Georgia Southwestern Sunday afternoon 13-5 at Dolny Stadium.
Lander drops to 15-14 overall and 5-7 in the PBC while GSW moves to 12-16 overall and 8-4 in the PBC.
Mason Streater and Tyler Prell were the only two Bearcats to have multiple hits. Streater had three hits and scored twice while Prell had two hits and two RBI.
For the third time this series, the Bearcats were first to score. After walking and advancing to second on a wild pitch, Walker McDowell came home to score on an RBI single from Vincent DeRubeis to left field.
GSW would respond with six runs coming in the top of the second. GSW would score six runs on six hits in the inning. The Hurricanes' offense would be highlighted by a pair of home runs and an RBI double.
McDowell would be featured in the scoring in the third for the Bearcats. After reaching first on a throwing error from the Hurricanes shortstop and reaching second, McDowell would steal third and score after the catcher threw the ball into the outfield to bring home Lander's second run of the game.
The Bearcats would get the bats hot again in the fourth with two more runs. After sending a double down the left-field line and advancing to third on a wild pitch, Streater scored on a sacrifice fly to left field from Prell to make it a 6-3 contest. Gary Garrett would single the next at-bat and promptly stole second to allow Ethan Wilder to score from third for the fourth run of the game for Lander.
GSW would get back to their scoring ways with a big four-run fifth inning. Three runs would come around on a home run while a wild pitch brought home the fourth run to give the Hurricanes a 10-4 advantage.
Neither side would be able to plate any runs in the sixth or seventh innings while both the Bearcats and Hurricanes would score in the eighth. GSW would score its run on an RBI double while an RBI single from Prell to right-center would score Streater.
Georgia Southwestern would score two more runs in the top of the ninth to conclude the scoring for both teams.
Nick Foray got the start and only went two innings. He allowed six runs, five earned on seven hits while striking out two. Braeden Burton, Zach Pellegrino, Evan Mauldin, Michael Nastro and Drew Luckey all saw relief appearances.
Lander travels to face No. 20 North Greenville next on Tuesday, March 29 for a 5 pm start.
