GREENWOOD – The Lander baseball team responded with a 15-10 bounce-back win against Georgia Southwestern on Saturday to tie the series up 1-1 at Dolny Stadium.
Vincent DeRubeis led the Bearcats with three hits against GSW. He also scored four times and had one RBI. Walker McDowell and Connor Droze both had multi-hit games as well. Both McDowell and Droze hit home runs for the Bearcats. Droze led Lander in RBI with four while Ethan Wilder was second with three on the day.
The Bearcats began the contest with runs coming in the first five innings.
Lander began with three runs coming around in the bottom of the first. McDowell began the inning with a double to right field and moved to third on a ground out. DeRubeis would walk but a passed ball would bring home McDowell home for the first run of the game. Droze would clear the right-center field fence to put Lander ahead 3-0.
The second inning would see another home run for Lander, as McDowell cleared the right-field fence to score Gary Garrett to push the Bearcats in front 5-0.
The third inning would see the Hurricanes score their first run of the game on an RBI single to right field.
DeRubeis would start the bottom of the third with a double to center field while moving to third on a ground out. He eventually came around to score on an RBI single from Wilder through the left side to make it a 6-1 contest. With the bases loaded, Matthew Burgess hit a single towards the Hurricanes' shortstop to score Mason Streater from third for the second run of the inning and seventh of the game for Lander.
Georgia Southwestern responded with a pair of runs in the top of the fourth as an RBI single brought home two Hurricanes to bring GSW within four of Lander. The Bearcats would put together the first of back-to-back four-run innings in the bottom of the fourth. The Bearcats scored the first run of the inning on a fielders choice hit by Wilder that scored Landon Dupert while an RBI double from Tyler Prell and an RBI single that scored two runs from Garrett would bring the score to 11-3 in favor of Lander.
The fifth inning would see Lander continue its scoring streak. Droze singled to right field with the bases loaded to score two Bearcats while a walk from Wilder and sac fly from Prell gave Lander a 15-3 edge.
The Hurricanes would catch fire in the sixth inning, as GSW would drop six runs on the Bearcats. The Hurricanes would score six runs on seven hits which featured a three-run home run to right field.
GSW wasn't done scoring, as they brought home another run in the ninth on an RBI single to make it a 15-10 contest.
Lander would hold firm in the final frame to shutdown the Hurricanes offense the rest of the inning and come away with the victory.
Bennett Nance got the start and went 5.2 innings to earn his third win of the season. Nance allowed 10 hits with nine runs, eight earned coming around. He struck out six Hurricane hitters as well.
Garrett Major pitched 3.1 innings in relief to earn his second save of the season. Major allowed one earned run on six hits while striking out three.
Lander and Georgia Southwestern conclude the series on Sunday at 1 pm.
