GREENWOOD – With the exception of a run in the first inning, the Lander baseball team was stymied by the Georgia Southwestern Hurricanes, losing the first game of the series 4-1 Friday evening.
Lander drops to 14-13 overall and 4-6 in the PBC while GSW moves to 11-15 overall and 7-3 in the PBC.
The Bearcats had five players record one hit while Connor Droze brought home the lone run of the game for Lander.
The Bearcats got on the board early against the Hurricanes with a run in the bottom of the first. After Landon Dupert singled through the right side and moved to second on a passed ball Droze would single to left field to score Dupert for the first run of the game.
After a scoreless second and third, the Hurricanes plated a run after a double to right-center and then an RBI single to right field. Later in the inning, GSW would take the lead on a check-swing single that allowed a runner to score from third.
With neither team scoring for the next three innings, the Hurricanes changed that trend with a solo shot to right-center field to begin the top of the eighth to put GSW up 3-1.
The Hurricanes added another insurance run in the top of the ninth as a triple and RBI single brought home the fourth run of the game for the visitors.
Kurt Rogers got the start against the Hurricanes and went three innings to begin the contest. Rogers allowed just four hits while striking out a batter as well. Drew Luckey was tagged with the loss after allowing two runs in the fourth inning. Braeden Burton, Zach Pellegrino and Tyler Bowen all made relief appearances.
Lander and GSW battle again tomorrow, with a start time set for 2 pm.
