ANDERSON, S.C. – The Lander baseball team continued its winning ways as it took a close 11-9 game on the road against the Anderson Trojans on Tuesday evening.
Lander moves to 14-12 overall while Anderson drops to 15-10.
The Bearcats swept the Trojans in the season series, with Lander winning the first game 8-6 at Dolny Stadium on February 22.
Lander saw multi-hit nights from Tyler Prell and Ethan Wilder. Prell had three RBI as well while Wilder, Vincent DeRubeis and Connor Droze all had two RBI against Anderson
The Bearcats jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the top of the second. With Droze and Wilder on base, Prell doubled to left field to send the pair of Bearcats home. Anderson would respond with four runs in the bottom of the inning with a pair of RBI singles and an RBI double to score the four runs for the Trojans.
The Bearcats got the contest tied 4-4 in the top of the third as a Droze double brought home DeRubeis and Matthew Burgess. Lander would retake the lead in the top of the fourth as a double steal from Gary Garrett and Chase Dougherty saw Dougherty come home to give Lander a 5-4 edge.
After a scoreless bottom of the fourth and top of the fifth, Anderson got back in front with a four-run bottom of the fifth. A trio of RBI singles helped bring home four Trojans and put the home side up 8-5.
Lander would get within a run of Anderson in the top of the sixth after DeRubeis singled to left field to score Prell and Dougherty to make it an 8-7 contest.
It wouldn't take long before Lander was back in front, as the Blue and Gold scored three runs in the top of the seventh. Reaching base on a fielding error and making it to third, Droze came home to score on a double from Mason Streater the next at-bat to tie the contest 8-8. Streater would make his way to third on a wild pitch before trading places with Ethan Wilder who slapped a triple to right-center field to bring the go-ahead run home. Lander wasn't done yet scoring in the inning, as yet another RBI from Prell, an RBI single to right-center, brought Wilder home to score and put Lander up 10-8. The Trojans would inch towards the Bearcats in the bottom of the inning as a wild pitch brought home a runner for Anderson to make it a 10-9 ballgame with Lander still in front.
Lander would tack on an insurance run in the top of the ninth as Landon Dupert singled to score Burgess from second to push Lander in front 11-9.
Michael Nastro got the start and went four innings against Anderson. Nastro allowed six runs on five hits while striking out three. Kurt Rogers earned his second win of the season after pitching 1.1 innings of scoreless relief while striking out one. Evan Mauldin pitched the ninth inning and earned his second save of the year. Mauldin allowed just one hit while striking out one Trojan. Zach Pellegrino, Anson Merrick and Braeden Burton all pitched in relief as well.
Lander hosts Georgia Southwestern next for a three-game series starting Friday, March 25.
