MURFREESBORO, N.C. – The Lander men's lacrosse team used a huge first-half performance to defeat Chowan 17-4 on the road to begin the 2022 season.
Lander starts the season 1-0 overall while Chowan starts 0-1.
Lander now outscores Chowan 28-7 in the all-time series.
Nolan Oakey led the Bearcats with four goals while Quinn Ingalls, Carter Wilcox and Drew Wilson were all tied for the team-high in assists with two. Wilson led the way with four ground balls collected while Blake Moore had a team-high three-caused turnover.
The Bearcats got out in front early and left Chowan in the dust, with the first 15 goals of the game going to Lander.
Chowan wouldn't get a goal until 1:35 remaining in the third. The Hawks scored the first three goals of the fourth quarter while Lander would tack on a pair of late goals to come away with the 17-4 victory.
The Bearcats put 33-of-44 shots on the day, while Chowan put 14-of-25 shots on net.
Nicholas Paige, Rhys Peterson and Liam Mackay all saw action in the cage against the Hawks. Mackay, who got the start, made two saves. Peterson made three saves while Paige made five saves.
The Bearcats are off to Anderson for their next match, as they travel to face the Trojans on February 12 for a 4 pm start.
