GREENWOOD – The Lander baseball team begins the season splitting a two-game series against the Erskine Flying Fleet on Friday and Saturday.
Lander and Erskine both stand at 1-1 overall to begin the season.
Lander took the first game 2-1 on Friday while Erskine took Saturday's contest 2-0.
Lander struck first on Friday off a home run from Ian Jenkins in the second inning. Jenkins went yard on his first-ever hit as a Bearcat to establish the early lead.
Erskine would counter on a double in the sixth inning before Vincent DeRubeis got hold of a pitch and sent it out of Dolny Stadium to give Lander its 2-1 edge.
Bennett Sloper got the start on Friday, going four innings while striking out eight batters from Erskine. Evan Mauldin picked up the win after pitching 2.1 innings of relief while Garrett Major earned the save.
The Flying Fleet would hold Lander to three hits in the second game to take a 2-0 victory on Saturday.
Erskine scored its first run on a wild pitch in the second inning while platting the second in the sixth inning on a single.
Bryce Jackson struck out seven batters over five innings while only giving up one run on three hits.
The Bearcats are back home for a pair of games against North Greenville on February 8 and 11.
