Baseball sweeps Lincoln Memorial - Bennett Nance deals complete game shutout

GREENWOOD – The Bearcats found different ways to pick up a pair of wins against Lincoln Memorial to sweep the series on a doubleheader at Dolny Stadium on Saturday.

Lander moves to 7-6 overall while Lincoln Memorial drops to 7-6.

Lander won the first game of the day 7-6 while taking the second game by a score of 2-0.

Ian Jenkins had a stellar first game. He had four hits and four RBI along with a stolen base. Mason Streater, Vincent DeRubeis and Walker McDowell all had multi-hit games.

The first game of the doubleheader saw Lander strike first with Jenkins slap a double out to right field to score DeRubeis from first base to put Lander up 1-0.

After the Railsplitters scored a run in the top of the third the Bearcats would counter with three of their own. DeRubeis would ground out to bring home McDowell while RBI singles from Jenkins and Streater make it a 4-1 contest.

Lincoln Memorial made things interesting by tying the contest at 4-4 with a three-run fourth inning.

The Bearcats would quickly find runs, with two coming around in the bottom of the fifth. After a walk from Landon Dupert and a single from DeRubeis to put two runners on, Jenkins would single to bring home Dupert while a single from Streater would plate DeRubeis to make it a 6-4 game for the Bearcats.

The seventh would see Jenkins bring home his fourth RBI of the game to put Lander up 7-4 before LMU tried to storm back in the eighth with two runs to get within one run of the Bearcats. Lander would hold firm and keep hold of their 7-6 edge in the ninth behind shutdown pitching.

Bryce Jackson got the start and went four innings while striking out three. He allowed seven hits and four runs. Evan Mauldin pitched the next four innings and picked up his third win of the season. He allowed two runs on four hits while striking out two. Kurt Rogers earned his second save of the season after pitching a scoreless ninth inning.

Game two was a low-scoring affair between the two sides with just eight hits shared between Lander and Lincoln Memorial.

The Bearcats and Railsplitters were tied 0-0 until DeRubeis sent his team-leading sixth home run over the left-field fence to put Lander up 2-0.

Bennett Nance pitched all nine innings for Lander, as he helped shutout the Railsplitters. Nance allowed just four hits on the night while striking out six.

The Bearcats take on No. 1 Wingate at Dolny Stadium on Tuesday, March 1 for their next contest.
