Jenkins and DeRubeis help Lander dismantle No.1 Wingate 10-2

GREENWOOD –  The Lander baseball team continues to stay red hot, as the Bearcats smashed Wingate, the defending national champions and current No. 1 team in the nation 10-2 at Dolny Stadium on Tuesday.

Lander moves to 8-6 overall while Wingate drops to 14-2 overall.

Although getting the better of Wingate, the two sides combined for 17 hits on the day.

Ian Jenkins had six RBI on two hits, with four of those runs coming on a grand slam. Vincent DeRubeis had four RBI on two hits. Matthew Burgess joined the multi-hit club with two hits against the Bulldogs as well.

The game started slowly between the Bearcats and Bulldogs, with neither squad able to plate any runs in the first two innings. That changed in the bottom of the third when Lander brought four runs home to score.

With two outs already on the board, Burgess singled to left field to keep the inning alive. Walker McDowell and Landon Dupert walked in back-to-back at-bats to load the bases before DeRubeis singled through the left side to plate two runs. A Jenkins' single through the right side late in the inning brought home two more runs to put Lander up 4-0.

After a scoreless fourth inning, Lander would come back for more, with five runs coming across to the Bearcats in the bottom of the inning. A walk from DeRubeis would bring in a run with the bases loaded before Jenkins unloaded on a pitch, sending it screaming towards the batters eye in dead center to put Lander up 9-0.

The Bearcats would plate another run in the sixth inning, as DeRubeis sent a pitch through the right side for an RBI double.

Wingate broke the shutout streak with an RBI single in the top of the eighth to make it a 10-1 contest.

The Bulldogs would strike again in the top of the nineth, as an RBI single with two outs brought around the second run of the game for Wingate.

Nick Foray got the start against the Bulldogs and went 3.1 innings where he struck out three and allowed just three hits. Anson Merrick got the win after dealing 3.2 innings of relief. He struck out five while allowing three hits and one run. Zach Pellegrino and Tyler Bowen finished the game out.

Lander begins conference action as it welcomes North Georgia to Dolny Stadium starting March 4.
