Baseball falls 9-8 to No. 15 Newberry on Sunday

GREENWOOD – Although leading 8-2 against No. 15 Newberry after five innings, the Lander baseball team was unable to hold on as they fell 9-8 at Dolny Stadium Sunday afternoon.

Lander falls to 3-6 overall while Newberry moves to 10-1 overall.

Mason Streater was one of the key offensive contributors for Lander, as he had two hits, a double and home run, two runs and two RBI. Bradley Davis and Matthew Burgess both had three hits. Ethan Wilder had three RBI on two hits while scoring once as well.

While neither team was able to score in the first, the Bearcats got the offense going in the bottom of the second when Wilder scored Landon Dupert and Streater on a double to left field to put Lander up 2-0.

Vincent DeRubeis made it a 3-0 game after he sent a pitch over left field in the third.

The fourth inning saw three more runs come across for Lander. The first came from a double from Wilder who scored Davis while singles from Burgess and Justin Wager scored the other two runs.

The final two runs for Lander came in the fifth when Streater sailed a pitch over left field to score himself and Davis. In the series against Newberry, Streater hit a home run in every game. He hit .538 in the three games against Newberry with seven hits, two doubles, three home runs and seven RBI.

Newberry would get their offense going in the fifth as well with two runs coming across for the Wolves.

Newberry would score in the fifth, sixth and seventh innings to cut the Bearcats lead to 8-6.

The eighth would see neither team score before Newberry would tack three more runs in the ninth to win the final game of the series 9-8.

Bennett Nance would go five innings in the start. He would strike out six while allowing two runs on five hits. Evan Mauldin, Nick Foray and Garrett Major all pitched in relief. 

The Bearcats return to Dolny Stadium on February 22 as they host Anderson for a 5 pm start.
